Director of Student Leadership, Activities and Orientation

Job description

Wells College seeks qualified candidates for the position of  Director of Student Leadership, Activities and and Orientation.  The Director of Student Leadership, Activities and Orientation is a critically important leadership position within the Student Affairs area and the College. Reporting to the Associate Dean for Equity and Inclusion, the Director is responsible for: 1) development and implementation of a comprehensive program of student leadership development and student activities, including the student governance system and volunteer community service; 2) oversight of the New Student Orientation program; 3) oversight of the College events management scheduling system; and 4) management of the Sommer Center student union building. The Director is an integral member of the Student Affairs division, providing operational support for programs and services under a cross-functional team strategy.


Knowledge of student development theory and its application in a college setting.  Experience with the development of student leadership training programs.  Familiarity with onboarding strategies to help students successfully transition to college.  Experience organizing large-scale events.  Ability to master event scheduling and student participation software programs that pertain to the position.  Experience with personnel supervision and budget management.  Ability to teach student development courses designed to help students adjust to campus life.


Master’s Degree.  Minimum of two years’ professional experience in higher education.  Demonstrated ability to cultivate positive relationships with students and student organizations.  Commitment to diversity and inclusivity and to working with multicultural populations.  Effective leadership and management skills, including interpersonal, organizational, and analytical skills. Ability to coordinate programs with other college departments and to assess program effectiveness.  Effective verbal and written communication skills, computer skills, presentation and training skills.  Ability to handle sensitive and confidential matters discreetly.  Ability to work independently with little supervision.  Knowledge of budget preparation and management.  Willingness to live in the on-campus apartment provided for this position or residency within 30 minutes of the College is required to fulfill the on-call responsibility.
