Orthopaedic Research Engineer🔍School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States📁Research📅May 03, 2021 Post Date📅89401 Requisition #The Department of Orthopaedic Surgery is seeking an Orthopaedic Research Engineer to perform and assist with MRI acquisition, gait studies, wearable technologies, and data analyses to support continuing human clinical trials in orthopaedics and osteoarthritis. The successful candidate will have experience with gait biomechanics and motion analysis techniques, knowledge of 3D kinematics and kinetics analyses, the ability to perform research MRI scans according to established protocols and MRI data analyses to support quantitative assessments of musculoskeletal structures.

Specifically, knowledge of sensors and software systems necessary for data acquisition (AMTI, Tekscan, etc.), knowledge of 3D mathematics and joint coordinate systems (ROMER, simVITRO, etc.), the ability to manage data collection, storage and analysis (MATLAB, Python, C, or similar), image processing, and basic programming, processing and statistical analyses to assist with development of new algorithms and software for data analysis and the preparation of charts, graphs and other documentation. They will be expected to provide effective communication of results and design parameters to teams in support for articles for publications, presentations, project reports, posters and grant applications.

Additionally, the Orthopaedic Research Engineer will share responsibility for maintaining equipment, ensuring adequate adherence to safety regulations, and demonstrate:

  • Willingness and ability to learn new skills, to trouble-shoot and to quickly solve problems.
  • Critical thinking, good judgment, and strong organizational and communication skills.

Duties include:

  • Design and develop complex and specialized equipment, instruments, or systems; coordinate detailed phases of work related to responsibility for part of a major project or for an entire project of moderate scope.
  • Develop technical and methodological solutions to complex engineering/scientific problems requiring independent analytical thinking and advanced knowledge.
  • Develop creative new or improved equipment, materials, technologies, processes, methods, or software important to the advancement of the field.
  • Contribute technical expertise and perform basic research and development in support of programs/projects; act as advisor/consultant in area of specialty.
  • Contribute to portions of published articles or presentations; prepare and write reports; draft and prepare scientific papers.
  • Provide technical direction to other research staff, engineering associates, technicians, and/or students, as needed.

  • Advanced degree in mechanical/biomechanical engineering, mathematics, statistics, physics, or related field.
  • Proficiencies with MRI data analyses, motion analyses, 3D CAD software (Fusion 360 or SOLIDWORKS preferred), MATLAB, Microsoft Office, and a computer programming language.


  • Bachelor's degree and three years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.


  • Thorough knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences.
  • Demonstrated project management experience.


  • Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.
