Position Details:

Summary of Duties:

The primary responsibilities of the position are to design, plan, execute, interpret and coordinate biochemical research and structural characterization of enzymes on new and ongoing projects. The research will involve both participation in team efforts and independent experimentation to complete the specific aims of new and ongoing projects.
The position includes responsibility for joint supervision with Professor John W. Peters of technician, graduate, undergraduate research experiments including training, planning and troubleshooting roles. In addition, the position will oversee procedural operations of the laboratory including: ordering of equipment, organizing product/materials testing, keeping track of grant expenditures, managing undergraduate student works, and developing original solutions to problems, and keeping up to date with relevant scientific and technical developments. Responsibilities of the position also include presenting results, writing research papers, report, reviews and summaries, preparing research proposals and funding applications and liaising with research staff.

Required Qualifications:

  • A Master’s degree in an appropriate related scientific or engineering discipline and four (4) years of progressively responsible related professional research experience. A PhD in a scientific or engineering field may be substituted for up to two (2) years of the required work experience.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience in the purification and characterization of strictly oxygen sensitive enzymes
  • Experience with the culture of anoxygenic phototrophic microorganisms
  • Experience with crystallization of oxygen sensitive proteins and structure determination using x-ray diffractions methods as well as routines for refinement and structural analysis and validation
