Overview

The Sanitation Supervisor is a member of Facilities Operations and, with a team of 10+ union team members, is responsible to oversee all daily sanitation operations and ensure the University waste stream is removed and transported in a consistent and timely manner. All elements of the University waste stream (municipal waste, regulated medical waste, universal waste, single-stream recycling, scrap metal, pallets, food waste, etc.) are within the domain of the Supervisor and the Sanitation team.

The Sanitation Supervisor leads the Sanitation team to achieve the Facilities Mission: To support the University's educational mission by stewarding the University’s campus in a sustainable way to create an environment of exceptional quality where learning and research thrive. This supervisor will exemplify the Facilities Core Values of Teamwork, Innovation, Integrity, Inclusiveness, Respect and Sustainability, while modeling and reinforcing the associated behaviors with their employees.

The Sanitation Supervisor will oversee a diverse fleet of vehicles and equipment such as rear load sanitation packer trucks, 2-yard scooters, pickup trucks, compactors, and dumpsters. Keeping this inventory in safe and effective condition is of primary importance.

Other supervisory functions include quality control, planning, scheduling, interacting with vendors and partners throughout the University. This position requires good judgment, safety consciousness, the ability to work within deadlines while multitasking, and effective communication skills with various customers.

It is expected that the Sanitation Supervisor will enforce University policies via coaching, training and use of the disciplinary process.



Responsibilities

Operations – (60%)

  • Ensure the quality of Sanitation services meets established guidelines by inspecting the work of team members and directing corrective measures to be taken when necessary, to meet those guidelines.
  • Ensure staff have the equipment and supplies necessary to perform Sanitation services.
  • Ensure team complies with all regulatory requirements in areas of OSHA and ANSI and waste stream management including Universal Waste and recycling.
  • Provide support and direction of Sanitation services under emergency conditions or unique circumstances by performing Sanitation duties directly related to the emergency conditions or as the situation dictates.
  • Practice our core value of Integrity by building a culture of safety; conduct routine inspections, communicate and reinforce safety policies and procedures, and review daily observations.
  • Oversee daily operations of the Sanitation program, monitoring efficiency while searching for methods to improve overall performance.
  • Assess route effectiveness and institute changes as needed to ensure efficient, cost effective, and productive waste collection on campus.

Administrative Task (20%)

  • Assign vehicle keys to Sanitation staff and maintain key security.
  • Assist in hiring qualified team members by participating in the interview process and making recommendations regarding the applicants.
  • Monitor and report employee labor, attendance, and punctuality.
  • Utilize technological tools and programs including, but not limited to CMMS (Maximo), SharePoint, Microsoft Office, routing software, and web sites. Ensure technology is deployed effectively and consistently on a personal level and within the team.
  • Request the usage of overtime by continuous monitoring of University activities and departmental workload.
  • Responsible to utilize the work order system (CMMS) to enter labor transactions and submittal of observed maintenance needs.
  • Schedule work assignments by setting priorities for staff, plan for effective University activities, and special event support.
  • Ensure personal and organizational compliance with all federal, state, local and company regulations, policies, and procedures in areas of health, safety and environmental compliance.
  • Evaluate and suggest changes in working conditions and use of equipment to increase efficiencies.

  • Develop employee through the performance review process, coaching, encouragement, training and use of the disciplinary process.
  • Carry and operate a University owned cell phone to maintain workplace communication.
  • Practice our core value of Integrity by creating a safety culture by modeling safe behavior, conducting safety meetings and training team members; enforce safety rules and regulations; investigate accidents and incidents and fill out accident/incident reports.
  • Show our core value of Innovation as an active member of the department leadership team, encouraging creativity, and demonstrating perseverance with recommendations to the Recycling & Solid Waste Manager.
  • Meet daily with Recycling & Solid Waste Manager to update him/her on matters of staff, equipment, work orders, training, etc.



Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Hold valid driver’s license and CDL at time of hire including air brake endorsement and current Federal D.O.T. medical form. Must provide any other documentation as mandated under federal and state regulations for CDL licenses.
  • Must be able to read and write the English Language.
  • Able to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals.
  • Must be able to communicate both written and verbal instructions clearly.
  • Experience with heavy equipment and vehicles such as compactors, dumpsters, roll off containers, sanitation packer trucks, stake body trucks, box trucks, etc.
  • Must be able to work overtime; before the start of shift, after shift end, weekends, holidays, etc.
  • Must be able to lift up to 100 pounds between 1 and 100 times per day and lift up to 70 pounds between 1 and 60 times per day.
  • Must be able to push or pull forces up to 70 pounds (moving trash dumpsters) over 200 times per day and push or pull forces up to 100 pounds (moving paper dumpsters) up to 100 times per day.
  • Must be able to bend at the waist and knees or work overhead, in and around vehicles to perform minor maintenance and inspections; and clean up trash sites.
  • Work in inclement work conditions such as rain, snow, heat, etc.
  • Organize and supervise multiple priorities at one time.
Preferred Qualifications:

  • Industry related certification(s)
  • Experience in a higher education custodial environment
  • Previous experience working in a union staff environment
  • Previous experience in sanitation services, preferably across a large geographical area
