Position Highlights:

The LBT Observatory (LBTO) is headquartered on the Tucson campus of the University of Arizona and the telescope itself is located on Mt Graham (3200m), a 3.5-hour drive from campus.

The LBTO is seeking two temporary Research Engineers (R&D Test Engineer I) to work on a project to mitigate vibration interference within the observatory enclosure which degrades the sensitivity of the observatories astronomical instruments.

The Research Engineers will work under the supervision of a Senior Engineer and provide engineering assistance with analysis, assembly and testing of lab vibration mitigation prototypes. Analysis and modeling of performance will use Matlab software.

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Lab testing of prototype vibration isolation systems with detailed measurements and analysis.
  • Investigation, analysis and documentation of vibration background at the LBTO site.
  • ON-telescope vibration testing of equipment and instrument vibration sources.
  • Analysis and Matlab modeling, prototyping, and testing of an Active Vibration Control module.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's Degree in Engineering
  • At least 3 months of relevant research lab work.
