Research Assistant, Ophthalmology Research - Georgetown University Medical Center

The Research Assistant assists in study of age-related macular degeneration (AMD), a devastating neurodegenerative disease that affects the underserved elderly population. They maintain the animal models that are part of an NIH funded research grant. Reporting to Associate Professor/Research Professor, the Research Assistant has duties - after successfully completion of all training - that include but are not limited to:

  • Handle colony management of transgenic mouse lines (breeding, expanding, and maintaining), learning/performing intraperitoneal and intravitreal injections, and communication with our genotyping provider (Transnetyx) and the animal facility staff
  • Apply acquisition and interpretation of retinal diagnostic techniques such as electroretinography (ERG) and funduscopy
  • Generate different transgenic mouse models, including conditional knockout and inducible knockout mice
  • Perform molecular and cellular biology techniques such as real-time PCR, Western blot, cell culture, stem cell, iPSCs generation and maintenance, and CRISPR gene-editing technology

  • Bachelor's degree with experience in animal handling and basic laboratory techniques or a Master's degree
  • A passion for research

  • Willingness to learn through trial and error
  • Excellent interpersonal skills
