Mills College Transition Update:
On March 17th, 20201, the college announced that after fall 2021, Mills will no longer enroll new first-year undergraduate students. Mills will most likely confer its final degrees in 2023 pending further action by the board of trustees. While Mills' role as a degree-granting college will end, there are plans to create a Mills Institute on campus, which is under development.
In this context, this particular role as Campus Outreach Counselor is a full time permanent position and subject to the same criteria for continuation as all other full time permanent positions as Mills during this transition. Throughout the interview process, the hiring committee will have ongoing conversations with candidates about this transition in the college and ways transition plans may impact the role.
Campus Outreach Counselor for Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS) will primarily provide direct service to students, with an additional emphasis on outreach and community engagement. We are seeking a clinician who is committed to social justice and passionate about providing services to a diverse, primarily young adult population. This role is a full-time, 11-month position.
Counseling and Psychological Services Vision and Mission:
Vision: We envision a healing centered community that continually returns to our values and critically examines our practices to seed justice in the mental health field.
Mission: We practice our values in three ways 1) Building cultures which honor therapists healing, intersectional identities, play, joy and rest; 2) Developing an Equity-Based Model of Clinical services to Mills Students; and 3) Unlearning colonial psychology frameworks and engage in shared learning on values-aligned clinical practice and teaching philosophy.
Under the supervision of the Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (CAPS), the Campus Outreach Counselor provides a variety of mental health services in conjunction with the Division of Student Life. This position primarily provides direct clinical services to students, with a focus on community based outreach and interventions. This position includes three general areas of responsibility:
1) Clinical Services
Be part of a team committed to providing culturally affirming and responsive treatment to a diverse student body. Responsibilities include:
- Provide short-term individual psychotherapy, crisis intervention services, and risk assessments including same day urgent appointments and phone screenings
- Plan, coordinate, and facilitate group therapy
- Share/ rotate after-hours on-call responsibilities with the director and assistant director
- Provide appropriate off-campus referrals, as needed
- Prepare and maintain confidential records in accordance to legal and professional guidelines
2) Teaching and Supervision in our Training Program
Prepare the next generation of therapists to provide individualized treatment through a social justice lens:
- Provide direct supervision and feedback to predoctoral psychology trainees
- Cultivate a training environment in which power, privilege, and marginalization are explored; including collective community values around Black Liberation and disrupting/dismantling white supremacy culture in the field of mental health and beyond
- Model reflective practice around your identities/experiences and their impact on treatment
- Teach and help develop didactic curriculum
3) Coordination of Outreach and Community Engagement
- Coordinate outreach and community engagement around mental health services for CAPS
- Conduct needs assessments and implement initiatives to enhance access to and the provision of culturally affirming and responsive services for specific student populations including first generation college students, Students of Color, and LGBTQIA+, including gender nonconforming, student populations
- Provide outreach and training to students, faculty, and staff; and build liaison relationships on and off campus, including with outside community based mental health providers
- Collaborate with Coordinator of Health and Wellness initiatives in coordinating/ managing social media and other means of promoting student events
Additional Duties and Responsibilities

- Support and promote CAPS collective values around Black Liberation and disrupting/dismantling white supremacy culture in the field of mental health and beyond
- Be open, positive, and respectful towards all persons contacted during the course of job performance with the intention of creating an inclusive environment throughout the campus
- Perform related duties as assigned
Candidates must first and foremost demonstrate a commitment to the Mills student population and to learning/understanding about the communities and backgrounds of the school's students.
- Expertise, experience with, and affinity for providing culturally responsive and affirming clinical services to people of color, in particular with Black and/or Latinx identified clients
- Commitment to providing culturally affirming services to historically marginalized groups including, first generation college students, LGBTQIA+,transgender, and non-binary students and students of all abilities
- Experience providing psychotherapy to adolescent and/or young adult client populations
- Skills in assessing risk and providing services to high risk client populations
- Commitment to clinical work and practice and systemic initiatives that disrupt systems of white supremacy and anti-Blackness
- Personal commitment to anti-racism work
- General understanding of APA or related professional standards, guidelines, laws and ethics
- Excellent oral and written communication skills and interpersonal skills
- Effective time management, ability to meet deadlines, and work independently
- Organized, detail-oriented, able to take initiative and multitask
- Creative, resourceful, and able to problem-solve
- Be open, positive, and respectful to others with the intention of creating an inclusive environment
- Knowledge of basic computer skills and willingness to learn new computer programs
- Experience providing supervision to trainees
- Expertise in a niche area related to young adult populations
- Experience providing clinical services on a college campus preferred, but not required
- Experience providing mental health related outreach programming
- Clinicians of diverse backgrounds including: clinicians of color, first generation college graduates, and clinicians who identify as part of the LGBTQIA+ community including genderqueer/gender non-conforming clinicians strongly encouraged to apply
Education and Training
- Ph.D. or Psy.D. in Clinical Psychology or LCSW or LMFT or LPCC
- Active California license to provide psychotherapy. Applicants should be currently licensed in California and able to practice independently. However, license eligible clinicians will be considered if the candidate will be licensed in fall of 2021 and can provide a clear timeline of their anticipated date of licensure. That timeline should be provided in the cover letter.
Physical, Mental, and Environmental Demands
- Office environment - anticipate that most staff will return to working in the office in person for the 2021-2022 school year though services may or may not be provided online
- Hearing and speaking to exchange information; seeing to read and prepare a variety of materials
- Sitting for extended periods of time

This is a full-time, 11 month (off in July) exempt position with an FTE of .92. Salary is $72,000 - $75,000 per year, and includes an excellent benefits package including medical/dental/vision/life/LTD insurance, 403(b) retirement plan, Employees with an FTE of 0.53 and higher are eligible to accrue vacation and sick leave in accordance with their completed years of service and leave category. Your vacation accrual rate will be: ? 10 days of vacation accrued during year 1, ? 15 days for years 2 - 9, ? 22 days per year from year 10+. You will also accrue 12 days of paid sick leave and 22 paid holidays per year (holiday schedule is subject to the discretion of the college).
