Major Responsibilities:
The Dental Assisting Assistant Professor/Program Director is a clinician/educator who understands, and is able to convey, the defined roles and specific relationships between dental assistants, dental hygienists, and dentists in the dental care environment. The Program Director is responsible for managing the daily activities of the Dental Assisting program, participates in program instruction, completes assessment of learning outcomes, and works with the Department Chairperson and Dean to oversee the program’s budget, develop and coordinate curriculum development activities, recommend individuals for faculty instructional assignments, and ensure compliance with Commission on Dental Accreditation standards. The Program Director will play a leadership role in maintaining community involvement, performing community outreach activities, and providing assistance to the adjunct faculty. The Assistant Professor/Program Director will plan and operate program facilities to maintain instructional currency, will interact with the development of the instructional abilities of the clinical and classroom faculty, and maintain ongoing interaction with the external agencies that define the program parameters. The Program Director will plan and instruct in a manner consistent with current dental practice standards and effective teaching methodologies.

Minimum Qualifications:

A bachelor’s degree in any field and two (2) years of full time occupational experience in the application of fourhanded dentistry principles, either as a dental assistant or working with a chairside assistant.


Must have had instruction in educational theory and methodology, e.g. curriculum development, educational psychology, test construction, measurement and evaluation. (Documented evidence of instruction in educational methodology from a recognized provider or accredited institution.)


A postgraduate degree in education, a Ryan Designated Subjects Vocational Education Teaching Credential, a Standard Designated Subjects Teaching Credential, or a Community College Teaching Credential

NOTE: All degrees and units used to satisfy minimum qualifications shall be from accredited institutions, unless otherwise specified.

Desired Qualifications:
• Minimum of 3 years of teaching experience in a Dental Assisting program.
• Teaching experience utilizing the application of basic educational theory and methodology.
• Ability to design and assess curriculum related to course and program learning outcomes through an equity lens.
• Excellent oral and written communication skills.
• Currency in contemporary practice, including the use of CAD/CAM systems.
• Commitment to work collaboratively with extramural sites and within a community clinic setting.
• Demonstrated ability to establish strong working relationships, including shared decision making.
• A commitment to dental assisting education, the community, and/or the profession.
• Computer experience with a range of applications such as word processing, excel spreadsheets, presentations, internet applications, learning management systems, and practice management software.
• Knowledge of the regulatory agencies that impact the operation of a Dental Assisting program such as Registered Dental Assisting (RDA) duties, Dental Assisting (DA) duties, and CODA Dental Assisting Standards for Dental Assisting Education programs.
• Demonstrated cultural competency, sensitivity to and understanding of the diverse academic, socioeconomic and ethnic backgrounds of community college students and staff.

Required Licenses:
• Current Valid California Registered Dental Assistant License (RDA), California Registered Dental Hygienist License (RDH), or a Dentist License (DDS). Must have been licensed for at least 2 years.
• Valid Certified Dental Assistant Credential (CODA), unless a California Licensed DDS.
• Valid BLS Certification.
• Valid Pit and Fissure Certification, if an RDA.
• Valid Certificate for 8 hours of Infection Control if licensed after 2010, if an RDA.
• Valid Certificate in Radiation Safety, if an RDH licensed after 2010 or an RDA.

Pay Information:
Class 1, Step A - Class 6, Step C ($5,883.75 - $7,928.01) per month based on the current AFT - College Faculty Tenured-Tenure Track Monthly Salary Schedule.

Initial salary placement for this Assistant Professor is commensurate with required education and related teaching experience as outlined in section A2.1 of the AFT Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement and it is non-negotiable. The District offers a comprehensive fringe benefit package including employer paid medical, dental, vision plans, sick leave, and opportunities for professional development. This position is FLSA Exempt and may not accrue overtime. Benefits will be provided under the terms of the AFT-Guild, Local 1931 - Faculty Collective Bargaining Agreement. Annual Salaries will be recalculated for service less than a full academic year based on Education Code §87815, any required adjustment will be made within the first pay period. Travel reimbursement for interviewees traveling more than 200 miles, one-way, may be paid according to geographic location (see SDCCD Travel Stipend Policy, Rev 7/14/2011). Typically, Assistant Professors earn tenure after 4 years and promote to Associate Professor.
