Position Summary:

The Goonetilleke Lab in the UNC School of Medicine seeks a Research Assistant Professor to co-ordinate a research program examining antigen presentation in chronic viral infections, including HCMV and HIV. Expertise in T cell immunology, flow and mass cytometry, and cell culture are required. The position also involves mentoring of students and technical staff and a role in preparing grant applications to external funding sources. The successful candidate should be planning to pursue an independent career in the field of viral immunology.

The specific responsibilities of the successful candidate will include: 1) developing and testing novel flow and mass cytometry panels; 2) co-culture experiments between professional and non-professional APCs to CD8 T cells 3) preparing manuscripts and conference abstracts; 4) proficiency with software programs needed to analyze and present data acquired through this lab work 5) mentoring trainees; 6) working extensively with existing collaborators and forging new collaborations both within and outside UNC; 6) assisting with external grant applications.

Educational Requirements:

PhD in Immunology, T cell biology, or a closely related field.

Qualifications and Experience:

At least 5 years post-doctoral experience in academia or a federal research agency; documented evidence of manuscript experience and ability to independently design and execute experiments; strong written and verbal communication skills. Previous experience in cell culture (DC, stromal cell and T cell), flow and mass cytometry are essential. Experience in molecular biology techniques including cloning, PCR and WB is preferred.

Applicants should have excellent problem-solving skills and focus on process driven results. Experience training and supervising research staff. Good communication and interpersonal skills. Should have the ability to build productive internal and external working relationships. Documented evidence of manuscript experience and assisting with grant applications.
