Overview

Lock shop Supervisor is a member of Facilities Operations and manages the functions and the responsibilities of the Princeton University Lock and Key shop. Primary duties include the planning, scheduling and execution of maintenance work carried out by assigned staff, as well as the coordination and oversight of work carried out by contractors including large-scale rekeying projects.

 

Shop responsibilities include the repair, installation and maintenance of locks, doors, door hardware, vehicles, and doorframes resolving immediate operational and/or safety concerns and assisting other skilled trades.

 

Responsibilities
  • Plan, direct, and set performance expectations to assigned Lock and Key shop staff (typically four trades personnel) to assure high quality work with maximum efficiency and safety. When necessary, instruct trades personnel in proper and safe work techniques.
  • Coordinate and communicate shop planning and activities with Site Protection Leadership.
  • Regularly inspect all assigned facilities, evaluate conditions thereof. Develop short and long-term maintenance programs that will meet all University requirements, within established budget and staffing limitations.
  • Based on knowledge of available products; purchase tools, materials, and equipment that best meets needs. Provide specifications and assistance regarding lock systems to efforts outside of shops.
  • Assist in ordering and coordinating work with contractors, often working with other departments to assure all necessary work is completed in accordance with established schedules and specifications and with minimum disruption of occupants. For assigned contract efforts, assist in preparing specifications, solicit bids, inspect and oversee contractor to assure full compliance with all University requirements. All purchasing and contracting will be in accordance with University regulations.
  • Perform all shop-level administrative and budgetary duties. Effectively use technology, including the Computerized Maintenance Management System (CMMS).
  • Maintain a shop-safe work environment, incorporating facility safety requirements and all pertinent occupational health and safety regulations.
  • As necessary, personally carry out work and assist trades personnel.
  • As necessary, work overtime or perform functions outside of normal business hours to support campus operations.
  • Carries University cell phone and responds to emergency call-ins on campus and for emergency after hours work as needed.
  • Communicates clearly and effectively, both verbally and in writing.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

      

Qualifications

  • High School Diploma or GED.
  • Verified experience as a supervisor or leader of a locksmith-related technical team.
  • Eight or more years as a journey level locksmith, with strong experience in the technical and safety aspects of doors and locking systems.
  • Possess understanding and skills of the carpentry trade, with strong experience and ability in technical and safety aspects of doors and locking system.
  • Develops keying schemes for master control keys and individual locks; keys and rekeys locks in accordance with master control plans
  • Experience in developing key record management documentation, policies and procedures.
  • Experience and ability to install and repair electronic and mechanical lock systems, card access systems, keyless locking systems, ADA door operators, various door closer systems, as well as fit and hang doors, both interior and exterior.
  • Interprets and applies plans, work orders, blueprints, specifications and sketches.
  • Strong managerial skills to assure coordination of staff, materials, and equipment for maximum effectiveness. Ability to develop short and long-term maintenance programs to best meet University needs within available resources.
  • Must have good administrative skills to handle budgets, paperwork, and communications within shop and university. Understand and communicate University policies.
  • Demonstrated strong leadership skills and the ability to develop effective working relationships with staff.
  • Ability perform overtime assignments as well as emergency call in needs. This position is considered core essential.
  • Possess a valid driver’s license to drive University vehicles.

  • possess ability to work at heights, physical agility and full range of motion, and ability to maintain balance.
