Teaching Assistant Professor, Writing Program

Job description

The University of Denver Writing Program, awarded the CCCC Certificate of Excellence, seeks at least one Teaching Assistant Professor to begin September 1, 2021. The mission of the DU Writing Program is to create a robust culture of writing on campus by a) helping students develop the complex writing abilities needed in contemporary academic, professional and civic life, b) helping faculty develop the knowledge and practices they need to support students in this development, and c) providing nationally recognized models for colleges and universities seeking exemplary practices in teaching and supporting writing. The program, which has 26 faculty in Teaching Professor lines, houses a two-course first-year writing sequence, a comprehensive and thriving writing center, a highly successful minor in applied writing, and support for writing across the curriculum. Position Summary
This is a fully benefited (insurance, retirement, professional development, annual merit review) 9-month position with multiple-year appointments. The position is promotable through a series that includes Teaching Associate and Teaching Full Professor. Writing professors in the Teaching series teach six sections of first-year writing per year in a quarter system, usually in a 0/3/3 schedule, in sections generally capped at 16 students. They participate extensively in program and professional development; provide program/campus leadership and support for writing; follow collegially established Program goals, policies, and features; perform a variety of professional service; and are active in the wider discipline of writing studies.

Essential Functions

  • Teaching six sections of first-year writing per year in a quarter system.
  • Participating extensively in program and professional development.
  • Providing program/campus leadership and support for writing.
  • Following collegially-established Program goals, policies, and features.
  • Completing an annual service project or the equivalent (i.e. a 7th course).
  • Performing a variety of professional service.
  • Being engaged with the wider discipline of writing studies.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Writing faculty in the teaching professor series must have the knowledge and skills to teach effective first-year writing courses and to contribute the programs wider mission on campus.
  • Familiar with current research, theory, and pedagogies in the discipline of writing studies.
  • Ability to work effectively within the professional community of the writing program.

Required Qualifications

  • ABD in Writing, Rhetoric, or Composition Studies; English; or closely related field.
  • Graduate coursework in composition theory and pedagogy or the clear equivalent (publications, conference presentations, etc.).
  • At least 3 years successful experience teaching undergraduate writing.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Terminal degree (PhD, MFA, etc.) in Rhetoric, Writing, or Composition Studies; English; or related field.
  • Dissertation or extensive coursework in rhetoric, composition, or writing studies.
  • Experience teaching in a writing center; work in WAC, WID, WEC, CAC or similar programs; conducting student outreach, faculty development, community outreach; or a research agenda in writing studies.
  • A demonstrated career interest in teaching first year writing and occasional existing courses in the programs Minor in Writing Practices.

Salary Grade Number
The salary grade for the position is UC.

Salary Range
The salary range for this position is $50,550 - $52,550.

The University of Denver has provided a compensation range that represents its good faith estimate of what the University may pay for the position at the time of posting. The University may ultimately pay more or less than the posted compensation range. The salary offered to the selected candidate will be determined based on factors such as the qualifications of the selected candidate, departmental budget availability, internal salary equity considerations, and available market information, but not based on a candidates sex or any other protected status.
