Research Project Manager

The Data Science Team at the Missouri Institute of Mental Health (a research institute at the University of Missouri-St. Louis) has an immediate opening for a Research Project Manager.

Nature of Work

Supports project management and research operations of the organization. Assists with dataset development and prepares data visualizations (e.g., charts, dashboards, heat maps) for program evaluation, and research protocols per grant funded initiatives and partner agency requests. Typically uses SQL data management tools, but may also leverage use of other tools, such as Tableau to prepare data visualizations.

  • Performs assignments and responsibilities of varying degrees of complexity and diversity
  • Applies routine processes and updates to maintain data structure and usability
  • Impacts a range of customer, operational, project or service activities within own team and other related teams

Key Responsibilities

  • Uses SQL and other programming language to assist in database development and management under the direction of principal investigator and data analyst to generate useful reports.
  • Prepares, documents and delivers project/program specific data sets. Prepares that are easy to read and interpret.
  • Consults with supervisor on processes in the development of datasets and data management opportunities.
  • Reports to supervisors about data quality, task suitability, and availability.
  • Develop and provide actionable information and in support of ongoing initiatives.
  • Consults with supervisors to support short-and long-term analytics goals.
  • Works with data source custodians to identify data sources of truth and improve data quality. Works with IT to design data storage/data structure models.
  • Ensures effective use of time across multiple concurrent projects.
  • Maintains documentation for all data management, analysis and reporting activities.
  • Uses data visualization and tools to present results and information.
Supervision Received

Works within broad guidelines and initiatives, providing input to research development and process improvement as requested.


Bachelor's degree in mathematics, economics, or statistics or an equivalent combination of education and relevant experience, or 2 years of experience from which comparable knowledge and skills can be acquired is necessary.

  • Experience with structured query language (SQL) data access and analytical data extraction or other programming language (C, C#, C++, R, Python, or others).
  • Experience with data visualization and business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, business objects, Power BI, Cognos, etc.)
Preferred Qualifications

  • 1-2 years of experience in data analysis/mining and reporting.
  • Domain-specific experience (e.g., Higher education, Healthcare, Medical Research, etc.) Experience doing research in social sciences. Healthcare, medical research or medical education experience.
  • Experience in data access and automated data acquisition of data techniques.
  • 1-2 years of experience with structured query language (SQL) data access and analytical data extraction.
  • 1-2 years of experience with data visualization and business intelligence tools (e.g., Tableau, business objects, Power BI, Cognos, etc.)
  • Solid knowledge of statistical methods.
  • Strong collaboration and time management skills.
Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with attention to detail.

Skills and Knowledge Required

  • Possesses a conceptual and practical knowledge in the research function and begins to acquire knowledge in other related functions
  • Strong collaborative and team-oriented approach to producing work-products.

Remote Work/Physical Requirements: Many job duties can and will be done remotely, especially in 2021 as we continue to grapple with COVID-19. For meetings or other activities in community settings, we will adhere to strict social distancing and PPE protocols. As it becomes safe to do so, reporting to work onsite at UMSL-MIMH and at community organizations will be expected.
