Assistant Director, Supreme Court Institute - Georgetown University Law Center

Georgetown Law's Supreme Court Institute (SCI) provides confidential moot courts to help advocates prepare for oral argument in virtually every case heard by the U.S. Supreme Court. To further its educational mission, SCI enables Georgetown Law students and faculty to observe moot courts and integrate them into class curricula, and sponsors programs on topics related to the Court

The SCI Assistant Director coordinates moot court sessions and acts as a primary point of contact for advocates and panelists. They manage a staff of 4 student research assistants who facilitate invitations to faculty and students and conflict screening and interact with faculty who are either serving on panels or incorporating moots into their course curricula. Reporting to the SCI Director, the Assistant Director has duties that include but are not limited to:

Coordination of Moot Court Sessions for Supreme Court Advocates & Volunteers

  • Integrates specialized knowledge of Supreme Court procedures and practice into SCI moot court policies and procedures, including managing brief distribution to panelists and responding to case specific questions from advocates and panelists.
  • Handles confidential information from advocates and panelists to build effective moot court panels, often navigating sensitive situations.
  • Writes, distributes, and manages invitations, confirmations, thank you messages, and other communications sent to SCI volunteer attorneys in law firms, government, nonprofit organizations, and other law schools.
  • Sends confirmations and thank you messages to moot court panelists and advocates.

Administration of SCI Moot Court Attendance
  • Hosts moot courts independently as needed, with discretion to implement and monitor SCI policies to resolve any problems as they arise.
  • Welcomes observers and participants, supervises student research assistants during check in, and responds to any individuals who are not on the approved attendance list.
  • Navigates sensitive situations when unexpected or unapproved guests appear for moot courts
  • Arranges A/V recording of moots at advocate's request, and reserves guest parking for panelists, as needed.
  • Manages any HVAC issues or maintains security of the moot court room, and enforces observation policies for student observers, , advocates, panelists, and their external guests.
  • Prepares the courtroom for moots, including placement of chairs and signage, ordering and distributing water for moot court participants, and contacting facilities for any HVAC issues.

Supervision of Student Research Assistants (RA)
  • Develops, implements, and monitors all policies related to RA management.
  • Leads RA training at the beginning of the academic year, including developing and updating the training manual.
  • Leads weekly RA meetings and maintains regular communication with the RA team.
  • Manages RA workflow, including setting and enforcing deadlines, ensuring accuracy of work product, and addressing any RA questions or concerns.
  • Serves as the designated RA timekeeper and manages the portion of program budget earmarked for RA services.
  • Monitors RA use of shared SCI Google Drive and the SCI email account used for invitation requests.

Management of Technology Needs
  • Records moot courts using our in-courtroom A/V System and renders them for distribution to advocates.
  • Distributes and maintains security of confidential moot court recordings, including developing, implementing, monitoring security protocols as technology develops, and communicating those practices to constituents.
  • Secures consent of panelists to be recorded, including sensitively addressing panelist concerns about candid and confidential opinions being recorded.
  • For remote moots, schedules Zoom meetings, distributes links and call-in information, manages security features, trouble shoots audio and video issues, times panelist questions, monitors observers, and ensures that advocates have access to a recording.

Coordination of SCI events, High Demand Moot Courts, and Courtroom Reservations
  • Manages requests to use the SCI courtroom by members of the GULC community.
  • Coordinates with the Special Events Office to plan SCI events, including catering, invitations, and RSVPs for a large end of term reception.
  • Works with A/V and Facilities for moot court set-up outside of the SCI moot courtroom.
  • Orders supplies as necessary.

Maintenance of a Current and Extensive Database and Update of the SCI Website
  • Aggregates moot court participant and attendee data for the SCI Annual Report.
  • Updates the SCI database with current information about each attorney and the participants in every moot court.
  • Edits the SCI Website with new moot court schedules, SCI reports, and upcoming events.

  • Bachelor's degree
  • 0 to 2 years of experience
  • Excellent interpersonal and communication skills (both verbal and written), superior organizational ability, and professionalism

Preferred qualification

An interest in practicing law, the U.S. Supreme Court, and oral advocacy
