Description:

Azusa Pacific University invites applications for an open rank, 10-month faculty position (with options for summer work) for the Director of the Writing Center. This position also carries a 2/2 course load in the Writing Program. In accordance with the strategic initiatives implemented by the Writing Program Administrator, the Writing Center Director oversees, implements, and assesses activities serving both APU students (graduate, undergraduate, and professional) and faculty writers across two Azusa campuses and multiple regional sites. The successful candidate strategically networks with every academic program, relevant academic affairs offices, the Center of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment, Office of Research and Grants, and University Libraries to serve the writing needs of this R2 institution. Finally, the Writing Center supports a diverse student population, requiring the Writing Center Director to have a strong record in and commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusivity.

Responsibilities:

    Provide leadership and coordination of writing (and speaking) coaching of faculty and students across the university’s multiple campuses. Oversee all aspects of the daily operation of the Writing Center, including overseeing budgeting and public relations.Hire, train, and supervise full-time coordinator, part-time staff writing coaches, and peer student coaches who implement the latest in writing center theory and practice across multidisciplinary genres and different writing stages. Oversee writing seminars, workshops, and research projects designed specifically for the APU context and Writing Center scholarship.Promote and publicize the services of the Writing Center (e.g., programs, philosophy, and procedures) to the campus community.Coordinate the creation and dissemination of writing resources.Teach 6 units per semester (or 12 units per year) in the Writing Program.Communicate regularly with faculty and academic departments in regards to writing consultant referrals, specific writing issues, and other relevant information.Provide ongoing professional development for Writing Center staff related to writing theory and practice, including online delivery of writing support services.Coordinate with IMT to keep up with the best practices of writing centers as it relates to the technology and equipment needs of the CenterOther duties may be assigned to this position on a regular or occasional basis to respond to the needs of the university.May be needed to work at alternative Regional Campuses or Sites.

Qualifications:

    PhD in Rhetoric and Composition or its equivalent as determined by the hiring committee. Strong written and verbal communication skills. Ability to manage details and follow through. Must be collaborative and an effective team member and team builder.

Experience:

    At least two years of experience in a university writing center with active memberships in writing center associations and rhetoric-composition professional societies.At least two years of experience teaching rhetoric and composition in higher education.Strong interpersonal skills for interaction with faculty and students.Strong verbal and written communication skills.Ability to work creatively and cooperatively.Strong project planning and management skills for projects of varying complexity.Scholarship/publications within comp/rhet preferred. A research agenda congruent with our R2 status is necessary.Experience and expertise in working with multilingual students is preferred given the fact that approximately ⅓ of our clients self-identify as multilingual.



Workload: Full-time faculty position.
