JOB SUMMARY

The University of Connecticut Hartford Campus is seeking a full-time Student Activities Coordinator. Under the direction of the Director of Event Services, this position will support student activities and leadership development for undergraduate students. This individual will advise and provide leadership to the UConn Hartford Undergraduate Student Government; support undergraduate student organization at the Hartford campus; and provide leadership development opportunities for the undergraduate student body, while incorporating experiential learning engaged with and informed by the many cultural, political, social and economic institutions of the surrounding diverse metropolitan area.

The successful candidate for this position will have the ability to work as part of a team to manage efficiently a detailed portfolio, a strong ethical sense, good judgement and a deep commitment to antiracist practice, equity and inclusion. The Student Activities Coordinator will work closely with other staff on campus.

DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Advises the Undergraduate Student Government, including the executive board, committee chairs and committees, in planning and managing their policies, programs and general operations, in accordance with University polices pertaining to University Tier III organizations.
  • Serves as the campus financial oversight of the USG Budget, to include training, purchasing, transaction protocol procedures and inventory of goods. Responsible for supporting USG with their purchasing and reporting of purchases
  • Monitors student organization registration process, including review of new registered student organization (RSO) applications, development and implementation of training requirements, tracking completion of requirements
  • Serves as a liaison between RSOs and the Department of Student Activities in Storrs
  • Plans, develops and implements methods and techniques of informing/educating/training/recognizing student leaders; may develop topics, prepares information designed to communicate and interpret information to the students, faculty and staff
  • Works with the Office of Diversity, Equity and Inclusion to develop and advance antiracist practices and programs on campus
  • Develops and maintains an appropriate relationship with the student groups within the University, while respecting the autonomy legally accorded such an organization(s)
  • Advises and assists registered student organizations in planning and managing their policies, programs and general operations; such matters include program and policy development, goal setting, fiscal and risk management, personnel matters, recruitment, public relations and marketing, academic standards, disciplinary codes and other applicable issues
  • Maintains visibility and contact with student organizations and connects students with community resources, service learning, leadership development, and career development opportunities
  • Plans and assists with planning of campus wide events, such as Involvement Fairs, Volunteer Fairs, Convocation and End of Semester Celebrations
  • Implement department programming that enhances the student experience in ways which encourage accountability, self-reflection, meaningful action and collaborations; and connect our students with our campus mission and local community
  • Is responsible for thorough knowledge of applicable University and State policies, regulations and laws; monitors compliance with and provides guidance regarding such policies, regulations and laws
  • Represents Student Activities on the Orientation Committee and enhances New Student Orientation through engagement and encouragement of student involvement on campus
  • Teaches one section of the First Year Experience class
  • Collaborates with campus colleagues to facilitate successful implementation of related duties and events
  • Serves as a liaison with the other regional campuses
  • Perform related duties as assigned

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree in appropriate field and four to five years professional experience in a responsible position related to student activities, or similar work which demonstrates knowledge of leadership development programs and student organization advising OR equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Excellent leadership, organizational and programming skills.
  • Excellent interpersonal, advising and communications skills.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of budgeting and fiscal management.
  • Ability to actively foster a campus climate that is welcoming and supportive of University of Connecticut’s diverse student body and encourages communication with and among campus constituencies and the community.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated interest in and commitment to working on a large, diverse, and urban campus.
  • Willingness to work irregular and flexible hours; evening and weekend hours are required.
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Master’s degree in Higher Education Administration, Student Personnel or related field.
  • Demonstrated creative approach to educational and leadership program development and delivery.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of practices of antiracism, equity and inclusion.
  • Ability to effectively manage multiple projects and programs.
