Founded in 1919, AUC moved to a new 260-acre state-of-the-art campus in New Cairo in 2008. Job Description:

The Law and Society Research Unit at the American University in Cairo is pleased to announce a fellowship for early career researchers, who have a research record but have not yet held a full-time academic post, to undertake a significant piece of publishable work in the field of law and society studies, preferably with a focus on the Middle East.

The fellowship is intended to assist those at a relatively early stage of their academic careers, and it is hoped that the appointment would lead to a more permanent research or teaching position for the fellow.


The fellowship is to be held for 9 months on a full-time basis.

Areas of Research:

Areas of research may include, but are not limited to, Legal Theory, Legal History, Anthropology of Law, Human Rights Law, Social Movements and Legal Contestation, Judicial Institutions, Politics of Legislation, Sharia and Islamic Law, Lawyers and Legal Elites, and any other subject that falls in the broad discipline of Law and Society.


All candidates must hold a post-graduate degree (MA, LLM, LLD, JD, M.Sc. M.Phil. PhD), in law or social sciences, or have equivalent research experience, by the time they apply for the fellowship.
Applicants who are pursuing their doctorate fieldwork, or who are in the process of writing their theses or dissertations, are especially encouraged to apply.
Early career researchers who already hold academic or research positions may apply, keeping in mind that a full-time commitment to the fellowship is expected.

Fellow Commitments

Producing a publishable peer-reviewed article in any of the above-mentioned areas of research.
Contributing at least one commentary piece to Manshurat Qanunyya, part of LSRU's website (
Organizing at least one LSRU public event, which will be related to the fellow's research topic.
Helping with the development of the themes of LSRU's annual academic conference.
