Lead/ Sr Research Associate

The Senior Research Associate reports directly to the Principal Investigator of the research study who is the Director of Bariatric Surgery at Temple University Hospital and an Assistant Professor of Surgery in the Department of Surgery at the Lewis Katz School of Medicine and will oversee and coordinate grant-related research for the PI’s direct research projects. This position will retain primary responsibility for the study, Improvement in Heart Failure with Preserved Ejection Fraction After Metabolic Surgery-Temple MyC4RE Program. This position provides direct oversight to Temple University staff involved in this grant.

Responsibilities include monitoring grant-related budget and operations and for other obesity related projects; includes oversight of participant recruitment, enrollment, and provision of informed consent; oversight and supervision of other research staff who will conduct study assessments; supervision of data entry and preparation for formal analyses; facilitates the planning and implementation of all initiatives within realm of obesity related disease and bariatric surgery; development of a training program and creation of documentation of the policies and procedures; these procedures will be utilized by research projects and help ensure that they are in compliance with the research policies and procedures; provides complex technical assistance to principal investigators in support of various research activities; autonomously manages day-to-day research activities, such as: designing and planning research studies, and overseeing general data collection; serves as an authoritative source on research practices, precedents, theory, and principles; supervises division/sub-unit staff, and ensures all projects are completed in a timely fashion; acts as liaison with funding agencies, analyzes data, sets research standards, coordinates project requirements. establishes policies and procedures for a division/sub-unit; ensures staff adheres to all policies, procedures, and professional standards within the division/sub-unit; establishes strategic objectives for division/sub-unit and provides input into divisional strategies based on functional expertise; identifies and analyzes complex problems requiring in-depth technical knowledge and experience in a specific area or discipline; selects an appropriate course of action that requires independent judgement and typically involves change or innovation in existing procedures or techniques; makes complex decisions within broad guidelines. establishes solid relationships with internal and external contacts in order to: assess customers' longer-term needs; act as a communication conduit on matters of operational and strategic importance; and occasionally make formal presentations to customer groups; oversees subunit/project budget, and provides input to department budget; supervises division/sub-unit staff; establishes priorities, provides training and feedback, and ensures all projects are completed in a timely fashion; planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems; Grant related responsibilities: trains and manages project staff to ensure successful completion of program goals; provides instruction and direction to staff members; defines tasks and coordinates the efforts of staff members for timely completion; interfaces with study's investigators regularly to ensure advancement of study's objectives; manages the recruitment of study participants; oversees data collection and analysis and assists the statistician with data analysis; maintain and establish databases as needed; data quality assurance and data security; performs clinical evaluations for multiple studies, both the ongoing study and two new, grant funded investigations including structural interviews to diagnose psychopathology; maintains confidential and professional relationships with participants; performs phlebotomy as needed for translational research; chairs all team research meetings, generates project updates and reports, and assists with all presentations and publications; serves as the main contact with the IRB and related committees for all regulatory communications; compiles IRB submissions and amendments as necessary; manages the regulatory documentation for the studies; ensures fidelity to research protocol; maintains research databases and files; publishes, in collaboration with the PI, scholarly materials, including books, book chapters, and peer-reviewed journal articles; involvement in manuscript preparation and presentation of results; research initiative responsibilities under the direction of the Principle Investigator: develops a data reporting and quality control methodology for ensuring accuracy of data; .leads planning and implementation of Research presentations; solicits and conducts scientific review of abstracts submitted by students, which are presented to the through oral presentations or written manuscripts; handles internal and external marketing/promotion of Bariatric Research in collaboration with Marketing & Communications; initiates regular communication with faculty regarding their research activities; develops a data collection system to streamline reporting of these activities; supports marketing in the distribution of the videos; develops and maintains a “best practices” research manual to be used by research faculty and staff; develops, implements, and maintains a weekly research training seminar series for faculty, students, and staff; marketing, creating session agendas, and logistics and serves as the Principle Investigator’s primary coordinator of software related to research profiles and funding opportunities. Performs other duties as assigned.


Required Education and Experience:

Bachelor's degree in life science or health professions field and at least four years of directly related clinical research coordinator experience. An equivalent combination of education and experience may be considered.

Required Skills and Abilities:

*Working knowledge of applicable computer software (Microsoft Word, Microsoft Access, Microsoft Excel) and applicable professional principles.

* Travel to field sites for data collection according to study schedules and time lines is necessary.

*Prior experience with IRB submissions both local and central.

*Strong eDC data entry and management skills.

*Must have strong written and verbal communication skills with the ability to interact with a diverse population of students, faculty, staff, and program participants.

*Ability to work independently or as a team and adhere to project deadlines.


*Master of Clinical Informatics

*Prior clinical experience working in the field of obesity and weight management

*Prior Surgical Department experience.

*Phlebotomy experience.

*Experience with RED Cap online database.

*Ability to perform statistical analysis.

*Previous experience with writing and submitting abstracts and manuscripts.
