The Engineering Career Centre (ECC) serves over 7,000 undergraduate and graduate students at the Faculty of Applied Science and Engineering at the University of Toronto. Celebrating over 40 years of its flagship Professional Experience Year (PEY) Co-op Programming, the ECC is searching for a leader to develop a solid operational unit backbone to support the units within the department.

The Manager has primary responsibility for the management of a team whose objective is to support all departmental units with respect to planning and oversight, business operations, communications, data management, facilities management, financial management, and human resources.

The Manager must be strategic in the allocation of resources and work within a collaborative framework.

The Manager must develop evaluation measures to assess the effectiveness of the Operations team’s work.

The Manager will manage special projects for the department as necessary.



Undergraduate degree and training in financial management or business administration. Graduate degree in business will be considered an asset. Preference will be given to candidates with education or experience in business or finance administration.


A minimum 6 years of experience as a leader and manager in an environment delivering excellence in stakeholder services. The ideal candidate will have experience meeting the needs of students, employers, and industry partners in a post-secondary environment. Solid understanding of co-operative education. The ability to lead and manage in a complex and collaborative educational setting. Experience leading change. The ability to articulate a vision and formulate plans to achieve an integrated service model. Excellent judgement, solid financial administration and budgeting experience, and the ability to build relationships are highly desirable. Experience managing staff in a unionized environment.


Excellent management and leadership skills, ability to mentor, and the ability to effectively lead and manage change.

Planning, organizational and analytical skills – in particular skills in managing both annual and sessional planning process.

Project management skills; ability to direct large-scale projects, e.g. re-development of a website or selection of computer systems.

Aptitude and familiarity with budget accountability, including forecasts and multi-year budget projections.

Excellent oral and written communication skills and presentation skills to large and small audiences.

Research, analytical and reporting skills related to current industry trends and best practices.

Well-developed computer skills in word-processing, spreadsheet applications and presentation software (PowerPoint, Prezi, etc.). Solid understanding of Data Management and Analysis.

Knowledge and experience with a career related databased or CRM is an asset.


Must have a strong understanding of the academic environment and a commitment to student development.

High degree of political acuity and judgment.

Ability to interact effectively and cooperatively with individuals at all levels and build sustainable relationships.
