Director, Small Animal Imaging Facility at Porter Drive🔍School of Medicine, Stanford, California, United States📁Research📅Apr 30, 2021 Post Date📅89392 Requisition #The Department of Radiology at Stanford University School of Medicine, is seeking a Director for the Small Animal Imaging Facility (SAIF) at Porter Drive. The Director will provide financial, operational, and scientific/technical leadership for a world-class small animal imaging facility located at the Department’s research facility at Porter Drive, in the School of Medicine.

The mission of the SAIF is to provide access to state-of-the-art and first-of-its-kind preclinical imaging instruments to facilitate translation of research from in-vitro tests to small animal investigations and clinical practice. This enables assessments of new technologies, novel drugs/tracers, variable phenotypes and novel biological concepts in living murine models.

Duties include:

    Work with Stanford faculty researchers to develop and update strategic plans to maintain a state-of-the-art instrumentation facility. Strategic plans include the development of funds to cover new instrument purchases, cover the instrument maintenance contracts, and manage the limited space available. This requires the Director to write successful instrumentation grants for the Center
Collaborate with faculty and scientific staff to develop new approaches to small animal imaging Engage with instrumentation developers to pilot new applications of their instrumentsProvide training on the use of instrumentation within the facilityMentor users in the design of imaging experiments, including determining the best imaging modality to answer a particular scientific questionManage day-to-day operations of the various branches of the SCi3 facility. This includes ensuring that all workstation computers are compliant with SoM IT requirements, and the maintaining of core servers for user data storage and retrievalWork with School of Medicine financial staff annually, to develop break-even rates and then assume responsible for monitoring income and adjusting the spending of the center such that the center is within 15% of breakeven at fiscal year-end. Provide leadership and scientific expertise in the planning and implementation of major projects, services, facilities, and activities.Develop advanced technological ideas, and guide their development into a final product or new approaches to research. Carry out complex or unique assignments important to the advancement of the field.Provide expert consultation and collaboration regarding technical requirements, capabilities, and advancement opportunities; make substantive contributions in diverse technical areas.Provide technical direction to other research staff, engineering associates, technicians, and/or students; facilitate workshops and demonstrations on research methods; educate and train users on research methodology and effective tools and techniques.Contribute to or co-author published articles, presentations, or scientific papers; identify research and development funding opportunities.Supervise staff and resources to meet program objectives.

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Experience managing the finances and operations of at least a medium-sized core facility. In the absence of such experience, other relevant financial management and/or operational experience.
  • A PhD in a related scientific field.
  • Computer skills sufficient to manage and maintain the data storage systems of the facility.
  • Experience in multiple state-of-the-art small animal imaging modalities, as demonstrated by publications.
  • Knowledge of multiple state-of-the-art small animal imaging modalities.

EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE (REQUIRED):

  • Bachelor's degree and five years of relevant experience, or combination of education and relevant experience.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES (REQUIRED):

    Expert knowledge of the principles of engineering and related natural sciences. Demonstrated project and technical leadership.Demonstrated experience leading and/or managing technical professionals.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS*:

    Frequently grasp lightly/fine manipulation, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds. Occasionally stand/walk, sit, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp forcefully.Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, use a telephone, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, operate foot and/or hand controls, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.

WORKING CONDITIONS:

    May be exposed to high voltage electricity, radiation or electromagnetic fields, lasers, noise > 80dB TWA, Allergens/Biohazards/Chemicals /Asbestos, confined spaces, working at heights 10 feet, temperature extremes, heavy metals, unusual work hours or routine overtime and/or inclement weather.May require travel.
