The Center for Public Health Genomics as the University of Virginia seeks a Lab Specialist Intermediate. The Laboratory Specialist plays a major role in projects investigating the genetic basis of colorectal cancer. The successful applicant is responsible for performing independent research, with an emphasis on use of human cell lines and human genetic resources. Laboratory techniques used include establishment, maintenance and experimental manipulation of normal human colon 3D organoid cultures and colorectal cancer cell lines, transfections, nucleic acid isolation and next generation sequencing library preparation.
A Bachelor's degree in genetics, cell biology, biochemistry or a related field is required by appointment start date. A minimum of six years of cell biology and/or molecular biology research experience is required. A Master's degree may substitute for experience. Candidates must have knowledge of general lab procedures, including the ability to modify and develop lab procedures, the ability to organize samples sets and data sets using computerized databases, the ability to plan and execute tasks of experiments, and the ability to independently conduct laboratory experiments. Knowledge of human tissue culture procedures and molecular biology procedures are also required. Must have excellent written and verbal communication, the ability to accurately interpret and report findings, as well as the ability to train others and direct their work. A minimum of three years of mammalian cell culture experience is preferred, as is knowledge of human genetics/genomics research or stem cell research.
