Job Description

Position Summary

The Duke Hospital Cardiac Intensive Care Unit (CICU) Advanced Practice Provider (APP) provides direct patient care services for complex critically ill Cardiac and Advanced Heart Failure patients, in the CICU in collaboration with and under the supervision of the cardiologist(s) and the Medical Director(s) of the CICU. The APP performs physical exams, collects and documents data, conducts diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, orders and schedules laboratory studies and professional consultations, prescribes appropriate interventions and medications, coordinates the care and discharge of patients, and provides direct patient care services. The CICU APP contributes to excellence in patient care, research, teaching, and provides leadership to the organization.

Position Requirements

Position requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner (NP) / Physician Assistant (PA) program. For NPs, certification as an Acute Care NP by a national certifying body is required. For PAs, national certification as a PA required and prefer equivalent of one year as a PA in a critical care setting, formal critical care fellowship or critical care rotation(s) during PA training program. Must demonstrate and maintain credentialing and licensing requirements of Duke University Medical Center and The North Carolina Medical Board and/or North Carolina Nursing Board. A Master’s degree is required. The APP must have AHA healthcare provider status for BLS and ACLS certification.


Primary hours will be rotational covering 24 hours / 7 days per week including holidays. Schedule and hours may be changed by Heart Center leadership.

Responsible to

Primary Supervising Physician, back-up cardiologists and the Medical Director/s for the CICU. APP Director for the Heart Center and to the APP Team Leader(s). In addition, s/he will be accountable to the cardiology department for clinical outcomes, defined quality indicators and to the standards set forth by the Heart Center and Center for Advanced Practice of Advanced Clinical Practice (CAP).

Minimum Qualifications


Work requires completion of an accredited Nurse Practitioner program, preferred. with a Master's degree in Nursing. Critical Care / Acute Care NP Master's or completion of ACNP/CCNP post-Master's program strongly


1 Year of Experience in an ICU setting (RN or NP), 3 years of experience strongly preferred.

Degrees, Licensures, Certifications

Must have current or compact RN licensure in the state of North Carolina. BLS required. National certification as a NP required prior to or within 6 months of employment. Certification as an Acute Care or Critical Care Nurse Practitioner strongly preferred.
