Position Summary:

University Development’s purpose is to support the mission of the university by raising private resources from alumni, friends, and other constituents to enhance financial support for students, faculty, programs, and facilities. University Development provides leadership and centralized development services to the 30+ other development shops across campus, serving as a focal point for principal/major gifts, gift planning, annual giving efforts, prospect management, corporate and foundation relations, stewardship, and communications.

Operationally, University Development provides university-wide information services including the implementation and ongoing support of the University’s alumni and development system(s), prospect and donor research, gift processing, data management, training, and support.

The Office of University Development is seeking an experienced developer with strong SQL skills to develop customizations and custom applications in support of alumni and development operations at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. This includes the conception, project management, development, delivery, and ongoing support of comprehensive and integrated solutions to help the University and its associated foundations meet and exceed their goals. This includes integrating off-the-shelf solutions, as well as, developing systems, applications and/or web services internally. This position requires advanced software development skills, and will work as part of the Application and Web Services team within University Development. With an emphasis on customer service, this individual will develop strong partnerships with users throughout the campus in order to fully understand their business processes and requirements while determining which technologies and services are needed.

This person will work closely with customers across the University and its affiliated foundations, as well as interaction with outside vendors, alumni, and donors.

Educational Requirements:

Master’s and 1-2 years’ experience
or
Bachelors and 2-4 years’ experience
or
will accept a combination of related education and experience in substitution.

Qualifications and Experience:

Our enterprise fundraising system is highly customizable, and the #1 technical skill required is the ability to read and write complex SQL. You should have the ability to write functions, stored procedures, and generally write complex SQL. Experience with VB.NET and/or C# is also required. Data Modeling Experience is also useful – understanding of tables, triggers, keys, constraints, and indexes. Problem Solving – Think critically to solve complex issues. Strong Verbal and Written Communication Skills. The ideal candidate will also have some experience with XML and basic understanding of HTML and CSS.

Currently:
Experience with VB.Net and/or C#, as well as XML, HTML5, CSS, and Javascript. Experience with Visual Studio and SQL Server Management Studio. Solid understand of Object Oriented programming techniques and experience with MVC. Be able to build and consume web services. Strong knowledge of Transact-SQL. Our enterprise fundraising system is highly customizable, and the #1 component, in addition to an ability to work with XML, is writing complex SQL. You should have the ability to write functions, stored procedures, and generally write complex SQL. Data Modeling Experience – understanding of tables, triggers, keys, constraints, and indexes. Problem Solving – Think critically to solve complex issues. Strong Verbal and Written Communication Skills as well as interpersonal skills. Experience in technical specification development is critical as this position will work directly with users to develop specifications for necessary customizations.

Preferred Qualifications:
The ideal candidate will have 4+ years experience writing Transact-SQL, including stored procedures, functions, and views, along with a solid understanding of Transact-SQL data types. They will also have 2+ years experience with VB.NET and/or C#, direct experience with Blackbaud CRM and Blackbaud Internet Solutions and/or NetCommunity, experience with using XML documents, as well as a basic understanding of HTML, CSS, and Javascript. Experience with Visual Studio and SQL Server Management Studio is also a plus. Experience and understanding of higher education and/or non-profit fundraising.
