Position Summary:

Reporting to the Associate University Librarian for Special Collections, the Curator oversees operations of the Southern Historical Collection (SHC), providing vision and leadership to ensure its continued preeminence as the leading repository of unique materials reflecting the histories and cultures of the American South. The Curator engages with Special Collections and University Libraries colleagues, UNC faculty and students, and with trends and directions in Southern studies to ensure the development, management, and ongoing relevance of the SHC’s holdings, services, and programs to their teaching, learning, and research.

As charged by the The University Libraries’ Role in Reckoning with Systemic Racism and Oppression the Wilson Special Collections Library team is undertaking initiatives to interrogate and repair the legacy systems that perpetuate oppressive structures and to create new systems that advance racial and social equity and justice in our spaces, collections, programs, and services.

The ideal candidate for this position will demonstrate commitment to this work in their professional practice.

The salary range for this Librarian position begins at $69,900. The University Libraries intends to hire at a minimum of $85,000, with salary commensurate with experience and qualifications.

Educational Requirements:

ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or equivalent relevant degree.

Qualifications and Experience:

REQUIRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-ALA-accredited master’s degree in library or information science or equivalent relevant degree.
-Minimum of three years’ professional work experience in an academic research library, archival repository, museum, or public history setting.
-Experience supervising volunteers, students, interns, or staff.
-Demonstrated leadership and management skills.
-Knowledge of current trends and best practices in special collections and archives.
-Commitment to creating a more inclusive historical record and to diversity, equity, inclusion, and accessibility.

PREFERRED Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
-Advanced degree in a humanities or social sciences discipline, preferably US history, American Studies, or related discipline.
-Demonstrated knowledge of and interest in the histories and cultures of the American South.
-Experience in collection development and management
-Experience with donor relations and grant administration.
-Outreach experience, including but not limited to exhibitions and public programs and establishing and maintaining relationships with user communities.

Working Conditions:
-Normal office environment.
-Must be able to work in an environment in which exposure to materials containing dust and mold is possible.
-Regular weekday reference desk shifts required.
-Occasional weekend reference desk shifts required.
-Occasional travel required.
