Essential Job Duties:

The Research Specialist is a dynamic position that requires breadth and depth of skill. A key responsibility for this position is serving as the teaching coordinator for VMC 937 (Introduction to Physical Examination Skills – Small Animal). This course requires the Research Specialist position to offer techniques and methodologies for teaching general and specialized physical examination skills including the use of teaching simulation models, basic point-of-care ultrasound, wireless auscultation system, and other hands-on basic techniques such as venipuncture and cystocentesis.

The Research Specialist coordinates the use and oversees the well-being of the research dogs used to teach the PE course. In addition, the Research Specialist facilitates administrative duties for the PE course including management of the moodle page, entering grades, budget allocation, equipment oversight and maintenance.

Another key responsibility of the Research Specialist is lab and clinical study coordinator for the cardiology service. The Specialist coordinates prospective and retrospective data collection. Retrospective clinical studies duties include medical record data extraction and patient follow up. Prospective clinical study duties include sample collection and processing, scientific data management.

This position is responsible for submission of IACUC documents and facilities submission of grants, research budget, including sub-awards and no-cost extensions as part of the research documentation. The incumbent will also assist in coordinating teaching experiences for the cardiology residents such as cadaver training experiences for interventional and surgical procedures and scheduling of Friday AM joint Cardiology/ECC house officer rounds.

The Research Specialist will also manage the dispensing of L-carnitine as a profit center for the lab.

Minimum Experience/Education:

Bachelor’s degree in a discipline related to the area of assignment; or an equivalent combination of training and experience.
All degrees must be received from appropriately accredited institutions.

Other Required Qualifications:

  • Must be able to communicate with a diverse audience
  • Must have relevant experience with management and compliance of controlled medications.
  • Must research data collection and management experience
