Position SummaryThe Athletics Field Lead Groundsworker coordinates and manages turf operations for the San Diego State University Athletics Department. Manages natural and artificial sport surfaces and grounds for all intercollegiate sports, as well as planning for and protecting turf/fields when used for outside events. Serves as primary turf manager for Aztec Recreation and their playing surfaces.Responsibilities include: Properly maintained and prepared athletic fields and surrounding areas; A tidy and well-maintained exterior that is ready for the beginning of the academic day free of litter with trash receptacles emptied and receptacle lids cleaned and wiped; Proper maintenance of a wide variety of attractive, colorful and interesting exterior spaces throughout the campus; Maintenance and cultivation of planted areas at a consistent level throughout the year, free of pests, weeds and dead material.The Athletics Field Lead Groundsworker is also responsible for analysis, planning, preparation, improvements, preventative maintenance and repair of turf, grounds, and landscape. Lead athletic turf team to provide the turf maintenance, game and practice preparations of all playing surfaces. Use expertise to assess field and weather conditions and provide highest quality playing surfaces. Determine proper species and cultivars of grass, mowing height, timing of topdressing and aeration, timing of line painting, and access to use. Coordinate grounds and equipment maintenance schedules, assist in developing policies, and recommend products and procedures. Assist the athletics department in staffing needs and hiring, training, and supervising student crews. Commitment to and responsibility for adhering to all rules and regulations of SDSU, Mountain West Conference, Pac 12 Conference and NCAA. The incumbent will assist the Landscape Services Manager and SDSU Athletics with preparation of the Athletic Field Operations budget.Objective - Provide an “Industry Best Practice” preventive maintenance organization to the SDSU Community.Expectations - Provide a thorough and accurate accounting of time and materials. Complete all routine work assignments and perform all additional duties as assigned. Incumbent maintains equipment and a safe and clean working environment. Consistent meeting of university needs in a timely and professional manner with increasingly improved skill. Follow-up on every project or task to ensure that all items are completed to the satisfaction of the FS Associate Director. Maintains a responsible attendance record, punctuality and consistent meeting of deadlines. Builds and maintains internal and external customer satisfaction with the products and services offered by the organization. Seeks feedback, is responsive to stakeholders and takes appropriate action for the situation.Performs work in a manner that supports and facilitates the work of others in Facilities Services and the university community. This position is designated non-exempt under FLSA and is eligible for overtime compensation. Work hours are, Friday - Tuesday, 6:00 a.m. to 2:30 p.m., but may vary based on operational needs.Education and ExperienceTwo years of experience in planting, cultivating and maintaining flowers and shrubs, or in general grounds maintenance work.Required Licenses and CertificationsValid California Driver’s LicenseQualified Applicator’s License (if not already attained, must complete within three months of hire)Preferred QualificationsDemonstrated leadership skills and experience, including the ability to lead, instruct and coordinate the work of a small group or crew of skilled and semi-skilled workers and to give instruction in the proper use of machines and equipment.Prior lead and/or supervisory experience.Knowledge of NCAA field layouts and painting techniques. Experience maintaining athletic fields, preferably at the NCAA Division I or professional sports level.Ability to cultivate and maintain warm season grass varieties, specifically hybrid Bermuda and overseeding practices.Two-year degree with emphasis in sports turf management (or completed coursework in horticulture, sports turf management, turf grass science, or a related field).Sports Turf Manager’s certification. Qualified Applicator Certificate or License (QAL/QAC) issued by the California Department of Pesticide Regulation (DPR).Specialized Skills RequiredMust possess excellent prioritization and task completion skills involving multiple schedules to perform in a fast-paced, demanding environment.Must have thorough knowledge of the latest methods, materials and equipment used in sports turf management and NCAA Division I or professional athletic field construction and maintenance. Knowledge of the parameters and dimensions of all collegiate athletic events (playing fields, courts, track events, etc.).Strong communication skills and demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with coaches, administration, and internal/external customers.Must demonstrate knowledge of effective leadership practices and techniques.Must demonstrate initiative and sound problem-solving skills.Must possess a strong customer-service philosophy.Compensation and BenefitsStarting salary upon appointment not expected to exceed $5,000 per month. CSU Classification Salary Range: $3,239 - $5,593 per month.
