Position Summary:

The term Graduate Assistant is the umbrella term that encompasses all types of GA appointments. Graduate Assistants are employed by the University to teach, conduct research, or assist with administrative duties in departments and non-academic units. Every attempt is made to assign Graduate Assistants to positions that are directly related to the student’s field of study or that provide the opportunity to develop transferable, professional skills. Graduate Assistantships are assigned in the department or unit and confirmed by the Graduate School.

Additional Details:

This is a joint appointment between the Graduate School and Human Resources to work on projects related to the human resource aspects of the University. Some of the duties include but are not limited to:

-Work with HR on a joint special project to create a recommended career path framework to help staff employees prepare for upward career mobility. The framework will include recommended development for the knowledge, skills and abilities needed for career growth at UNCG. This will be the main project of the assistantship, especially in Fall 2021.

-Researches various sources for accurate statistical information on market availability (see Applied Knowledge for sources) and designs methods of retrieving and providing aggregate metrics using such information.

-Develops spreadsheets and/or databases to manage statistical information.

-Prepares market availability by discipline for faculty positions and by profession for staff positions. This is a much more detailed breakdown than required by the annual Affirmative Action Plan.

-Use survey data provided by the College and University Personnel Association, IPED’s, census data, National Survey of Earned Doctorates, and other such resources (other references provided by the Department of Labor, Code of Federal Regulations, Employment Security Commission, and other state and federal agencies) to compile labor market data.

-Maintain knowledge and skills relating to the operation of a PC and Microsoft Office Software including, but not limited to, development and maintenance of Excel spreadsheets. Compose documents and reports containing graphs and tables using Word/Excel or a similar software, and extract and organize statistical information from a variety of sources.

-Work with the AVC of Human Resources on special projects related to SHRA and EHRA non-faculty at UNCG

-Work with the Director of Budget, Personnel, and Planning or the Business Coordinator on special projects related to hiring and personnel related to graduate students at UNCG

-Office duties such as filing, copying, data entry, etc.

This position is for 20 hours per week from 8/1/2021 – 4/30/2022. Hours will be divided between the Graduate School and Human Resources, depending on the project, and the needs each week, but will not exceed 20 hours per week. The pay is $13,500.00 for the term of the agreement ($1500 per month) and tuition support will be provided.

Minimum Qualifications:

To be eligible for appointments as a graduate assistant, you must:
•Maintain academic good standing at all times (3.0).
•Be enrolled full-time, which is generally a minimum of 9 credits.
•Make satisfactory progress toward your degree as defined by your academic program and the Graduate School.
•Meet the requirements to be eligible for employment in the U.S.
