Overview

Princeton University is seeking an innovative technology and business leader to serve as its Director of enterprise monitoring services. In this role, you will build and lead a team to envision, architect, and deploy end-to-end and edge-to-cloud monitoring services that optimize proactive detection and automated resolution to ensure the highest levels of application availability and performance across the University IT infrastructure. These monitoring services will analyze operational data from a multitude of sources and be driven by automation and data analytics to proactively monitor systems both on- and off-premises.

Reporting to the Associate CIO of Enterprise Infrastructure Services (EIS) within the Office of Information Technology (OIT), you will partner with organizational executive leadership, members of the Information Security Office, and key University stakeholders to direct efforts to redefine, plan for, and execute on the vision for the University’s campus-wide monitoring service. As part of this work, you will envision and implement a digitally-focused strategy for IT monitoring at Princeton that leverages industry best practices and the University’s service management framework to achieve a streamlined, continuously-improving, and highly automated operational monitoring model.

To start, you will lead a small team of technical staff and oversee the strategy and all operational aspects of IT-enabled monitoring services. Monitoring will span on-premises research and enterprise networks, data center infrastructures, critical infrastructure, Internet of Things devices, and applications. You will also consult on monitoring strategies with campus colleagues leading key initiatives having monitoring needs, such as wireless and wired network initiatives, cloud migrations, and other strategic IT infrastructure, application, and services efforts.



Responsibilities

  • Direct the strategic business and technology vision, multi-year roadmap, and implementation plan for forward looking and state-of-the-art campus monitoring services
  • Lead teams in designing and implementing strategic monitoring initiatives
  • Drive continuous advancements in monitoring operations through process improvement and automation achieved through service management methodologies and solutions
  • Research industry best practices and next generation monitoring approaches and technologies to make recommendations for change that continuously evolve monitoring performance and keep pace with industry advancements
  • Serve as a key representative for OIT on University projects, ensuring monitoring technologies are accounted for
  • Partner closely with the Office of the Dean for Research, the Princeton Institute for Computational Science and Engineering (PICSciE), the Information Security Office, and other stakeholders to ensure monitoring services meet the unique and varying demands of these key constituencies
  • Drive the adoption of service management within the monitoring services framework, in line with the Office of Information Technology’s continuous improvement model
  • Build and sustain a departmental culture of teamwork, collaboration, customer-focus, and operational excellence
  • Manage the high-performing team of technical staff responsible for the portfolio of monitoring systems
  • Build and manage relationships with IT system owners across campus
  • Develop operational and capital budgets along with forecasting models to actively manage resource allocations
  • Guide technical leads and teams through complex problems to resolution
  • Serve as the escalation point for team members
  • Coach staff and encourage professional and skills development through opportunities
  • Evaluate departmental processes to drive automation efforts and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Ensure the monitoring services uses data analytics to provide insights into the security, health, availability, and reliability of monitored IT-enabled systems and devices
  • Identify and leverage key indicators available for the monitoring services to assess system performance and opportunities for tuning and improvements
  • Ensure operational activities are carried out following organizational Service Management processes
  • Support the University’s information security strategy in all aspects of operating and improving monitoring services infrastructures
  • Embed controls to protect all uses of the monitoring service with special attention to IP-based critical infrastructure systems
  • Solicit feedback from customer groups to inform and drive significant improvements
  • Maintain confidential data in the strictest confidence and ensure privacy, security and proper use in accordance with University information security policy


Qualifications

  • 10+ years of experience working on critical, large-scale initiatives for a complex information technology environment, including 7+ years in a leadership position
  • Strong business acumen with proven ability to forecast and implement multi-year technical and business strategies to advance IT infrastructure to meet institutional needs
  • Demonstrable track record for developing, leading, and managing high performing teams in a complex organization
  • 7+ years hands-on technical experience in monitoring functions such as application performance monitoring, network monitoring, and security monitoring
  • Experience deploying and working with application performance monitoring platforms e.g., Dynatrace, SolarWinds
  • Experience integrating monitoring platforms with ServiceNow for event and incident management
  • Solid understanding of network technologies: 802.11, 4G, network switching, routing
  • Solid understanding of cloud-based services and monitoring frameworks for Microsoft Azure (preferred), Amazon Web Services, Google Cloud Platform or other similar cloud environments
  • Ability to work with and influence across all levels of the organization

Education

Bachelor's degree, or equivalent work-related experience
