This position is designed for an incumbent that performs as a working superintendent in the grounds maintenance area. The incumbent shall monitor and improve the beauty and the safety of the exterior environment of the campus, Alcorn State University, by providing supervisory skills and horticultural expertise to landscape maintenance and improvements.Scope of Responsibilities:
•Maintain the health and beauty of the trees and shrubs and be able to evaluate the process from a horticultural perspective. This shall include but not be limited to chemical applications, weed removal, fertilization, watering, wrapping young trees, pruning and removal of trees and shrubs. This may include work performed by staff and/or contracted labor.
•Maintain the health and beauty of the turf to include athletic fields, from the perspective of the need for a functional, low maintenance, manicured turf. Identify problems in the turf and remedy through the application of fertilizer, surfactant, herbicides or pesticides. This also includes, but is not limited to, mowing, edging sidewalks and shrub beds, watering, sod replacement, and filling holes. This may include work performed by staff and/or contracted labor
•Install and maintain annual and perennial flowers, trees and shrubs, in compliance with approved design. This shall include, but not be limited to, soil preparation, construction of planter boxes and construction of retaining walls. This may include work performed by staff and/or contracted labor.
•Design, plan and coordinate landscape improvements using information on available plant material, available level of maintenance and the landscape master plan. This shall include estimating quantities of material needed and identifying the individual plants to be utilized at the vendor site.
•Plan, schedule, coordinate, and supervise the repair of roads, parking lots, walks, storm drains and other landscape fixtures. This includes but is not limited to cleaning, sweeping and patching. Work may be performed by staff and/or contract labor.
•Supervise maintenance of the equipment common to the trade. This shall include but not be limited to lubricating, cleaning, sharpening blades, tune-ups, adjustment, and preventive maintenance.
•Maintain shop and worksite in a clean, safe and orderly manner.
•Perform scheduled maintenance activities to include but not limited to the support of special events, projects, conferences, planned utility outages, and activities sponsored by individuals or groups leasing parts of the campus. Work may be performed by staff.
•Direct the work of groundskeepers, equipment operators, and other personnel necessary to maintain the campus grounds and athletic fields. This work includes: mowing; chemical treatments of lawns, trees, and shrubs; lawn renovations; lawn irrigation; pruning trees and shrubs; propagation, transplanting, and removal of trees and shrubs; etc.
•Assure that the policies of the university, and of Facilities as well as all safety regulations, are known and observed by grounds staff.
•Inspect work of personnel assigned, and direct corrective measures to insure satisfactory performance.
•Employ persons to fill vacancies as they occur. Requisition supplies and materials, and test new products; requisition new equipment and parts as needed.
•Design, and supervise installation of lawn irrigation systems.
•Responsible for ice and snow removal as needed.
•Minimum of two years’ experience in landscape maintenance.
•Possession of a valid Mississippi driver’s license as it will be necessary to drive off campus.
•Ability to operate hand tools, testing instruments, and vehicles common to the trade.
•Ability to safely work with mild chemicals common to the trade in a manner which protects oneself, others in the area of the work, and to the environment.
•Ability to work out of doors in all types of weather.
•Ability to climb and work from heights.
•Ability to lift large heavy, bulky items.
•Ability to effectively communicate verbally and in writing and to take instructions from either.
•Ability to design and work from architectural plans, drawings, and operational and maintenance manuals common to the trade.
•Ability to work with other members of the department, and meet the public well.
NoneKnowledge Skills and Abilities:
•Requires working with full time grounds staff and other facilities staff, as well as interaction with staff from other departments. Success is based on the ability to work with an extremely broad social and intellectual assortment of people.
•Direct the operational and personnel activities of the grounds department; responsible for all phases of grounds management
•This position requires extensive technical knowledge and understanding of grounds management and horticultural practices. It requires the ability to organize, prioritize, and perform under pressure in both client contact and internal departmental capacity.
