The UCLA Joint Institute for Regional Earth System Science and Engineering (JIFRESSE) invites candidates whose research will focus on analysis of observations, model simulations and electrical engineering. The research involves:
a) Develop capabilities for mapping field-scale high-resolution surface soil moisture using synthetic aperture radar (SAR) data.
b) Using multi sensor data including SAR, optical, microwave radiometer, derive inundation maps and waterbody extents globally.
c) Construct the retrieval algorithms for soil moisture and inundation using electromagnetic models and machine learning.
d) Characterize uncertainty in the derived products of soil moisture and inundation using analytical, numerical, and statistical methods with the knowledge of the radar instruments.

Required qualifications include:
1) Ph.D. in physics and electrical engineering, and minimum of 3 years in relevant fields;
2) Extensive knowledge of earth science and radar engineering, particularly hydrologic processes and radar remote sensing;
3) Excellent written and verbal communication skills.
