Media Technologies and Production (MTP) is the operational oversight department for the Emerging Media Lab (EML). The EML is the heart of the Augmented Reality/Virtual Reality/2D and 3D Animation/Character and Game Design/Prototyping curriculums of Emerson's Visual and Media Arts Department (VMA). The Manager, EML position is responsible for the successful day-to-day operation of the lab, including the hiring, training, scheduling, and performance evaluations of student staff and, in partnership with the IT department, the troubleshooting of lab equipment and software. Additionally, and as requested, the Manager, EML provides expert operational support to students and faculty users.

Primary Duties, Responsibilities, and Tasks: Tests computer and software builds and ensures that the facility is operationally effective for class and study use. Trains, schedules, and oversees student employees in Maya, Unity and other software support. Provides support hours for student lab users. Interacts with faculty and students as necessary to assist in the completion of projects.

Job Duties:

  • Oversight of the daily operation of the Emerging Media Lab facility. Duties include initiating daily communication with professors to ensure that curricular software and hardware needs are fully supported, handling checkout and returns for equipment vended to students, and providing technical support and assistance for student projects. Schedule, manage, and train student employees in Maya, Unity, and other software so that they may offer support to student lab users. Must be attentive to daily opening and closing procedures, including the locking of doors, logging off of computers, and general cleanliness of the spaces.

  • In partnership with EML faculty and IT staff, annually review and revise the EML computer software chart. Perform research on software as requested by professors, and offer up-to-date alternatives that are mindful of the EML's current workflow and software and hardware compatibility issues.

  • Stay abreast of industry trends through online research, attendance at local vendor presentations and industry conferences or wrap-ups. Create proposals for new purchases based on feedback from faculty. Work closely with VMA faculty and staff, the MTP integration team, and the IT department to fully integrate and support new purchases for the EML.

  • When requested, offer technical support to faculty and students, and ensure that the EML's technical resources are well-maintained and available for in-class and open hours use.

  • On an ongoing basis, work with senior MTP management to develop strategic initiatives to improve and enhance the EML facility based on curriculum needs, industry trends, and faculty and student feedback. Continually work to develop, implement, and refine best practices, workflows, and efficiencies in order to improve the EML user experience.

  • In the spirit of service excellence, compare notes and share ideas and resources with other MTP staff in an effort to continually improve the overall success of the department.

    Required Knowledge, Skills, and Education (including hardware, software, and equipment): BA in related field, or equivalent experience. Extensive knowledge of Maya and Unity software. Experience and deep familiarity with TD (Technical Director) aspects of Maya, including rigging/MEL/Python/rendering. High level of Windows computer literacy. Ability to troubleshoot hardware and software issues. Proficiency in Microsoft Office Suite. Excellent oral and written communication skills. Ability to thrive in a diverse workplace. Team player. Well-organized and detail-oriented.

    Preferred/Desirable Knowledge, Skills, and Education (including hardware, software, and equipment): Advanced degree in related field, or equivalent experience. Knowledge of Unity game development engine. Professional mastery of 3D animation production. Capable of properly transferring motion capture data into Maya/Unity. Experience maintaining a render farm. Experience with Mac OS.

    Required Prior Work Experience: Experience working in 3D animation in a professional environment

    Grade of Position: A15E

    Scheduled Weekly Hours: 36.25

    Hiring Range: $51,100.00 - $53,600.00
