Position Description:
The Director of Financial Aid for the School of Nursing is responsible for all the financial aid operations and commensurate administrative responsibilities. Responsible for all aspects related to processing (preparing, analyzing, assessing, reviewing, awarding and revising) and counseling current and prospective students and families on the financial aid application and delivery system. Manages the annual awards expenditure of over $15 million to approximately 600 enrolled nursing students. Of that total, administers $8 million in federal, university and private loan programs funds, most of which have different award criteria, restrictions, investment and reporting requirements. Manages a $3 million scholarship/training grant portfolio. Provides individual counseling of personal finance and debt management assistance which includes both entrance and exit financial aid counseling. Counsels students on an appointment or walk-in basis on all financial aid matters. Responsible for balancing the financial aid budget on a monthly, quarterly and yearly basis using two databases, QDB for queries and FAM for UCLA financial aid management. Maintains quality control to ensure compliance with established Federal and University policies and procedures using independent professional judgment over all financial aid actions.

Monitors all financial aid transfers (MTF) and balances that occur within the School of Nursing from the Business Office. Manages financial aid orientation for all students in all four nursing programs during established student orientation programs. Interprets federal guidelines and regulations as well as new federal reauthorization policies. Compiles and submits Federal grant proposals as well as all federal performance reports to respective agencies.

Identifies private foundations, federal, and state sources of funding using the BAM portal at UCLA for undergraduate scholarships, and makes information available to students, parents, and faculty through distribution of information to students and postings to the financial aid website for the SON. Develops nursing student awarding policies and performs record keeping in accordance with federal and university guidelines. Collaborates with Dean and Associate Deans when administrative issue arise.

Attends scheduled Directors meeting at SON. Communicates with directors in student recruitment and admissions and student services to proactively address student needs and coordinate SON initiatives. Nominates students for Graduate Division Awards to the Graduate Division Office. Communicates newsworthy scholarship recipient information to SON Director of Communications. Supervises work-study student, if available. Attends weekly undergrad meeting at central financial aid office. Attend monthly conference call with all UC professional school financial aid directors.

Responsible for submitting all Graduate division awards on "Go.Grad" site. Manages emergency loan program. Accesses all federally secured financial aid websites to monitor compliance with federal loan limits and assess for loan application completeness. Represents SON at donor scholarship functions and financial aid conferences.

Acts as a board member of the Nursing Advisory committee- Office of Statewide health planning and development. Sets up consultation meetings with lender institution representatives.

In 15 of the 16 medical specialty areas examined, UCLA Medical Center ranked in the top 20.
