Be Well at Work - Elder Care Program, under the auspices/direction of Employee Assistance, offers confidential, no cost assistance to UC Berkeley Faculty and Staff who are caring for or concerned about an elder or dependent adult. It also provides services to employees of the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

The Elder Care Program offers assistance with a wide range of issues, including:
  • Free, confidential counseling, consultation, assessment, and referral to local and long-distance resources.
  • Consultation for supervisors, managers and colleagues regarding faculty and staff who are experiencing stress and/or performance problems due to caregiving responsibilities.
  • Informative workshops and webinars.
  • Additional responsibilities include program promotion; administrative functions; education and training for faculty and staff; and support of special projects.

Responsibilities

The Elder Care Counselor, a member of Employee Assistance staff, under the supervision of the Be Well at Work Director, provides counseling, resources and educational services to UC Berkeley faculty, staff, post docs, visiting scholars, and their immediate family members, who are caring for, or concerned about an elder or dependent adult. Services are also provided to LBL employees and their immediate family members.

Clinical Services

1. The Elder Care Counselor provides intake, assessment, and referrals to appropriate resources at an advanced level of clinical expertise. Clinical services include:
a. Short-term therapeutic intervention with a broad range of Elder Care and Caregiver concerns.
b. Clinical psychosocial and psychoeducational consultation regarding elder care planning, ongoing elder care concerns, and crisis situations.
c. Elder Care planning, consultation with and referral to campus and/or community resources, ongoing support, and case management as needed.
d. Facilitation of support groups

2. The Elder Care Counselor is available to consult with Employee Assistance counselors and the Director, as well as supervisors, and faculty and staff managers regarding faculty and staff with elder/adult dependent care concerns.
3. Provide clinical backup to Employee Assistance Program for assessment, referral, and crisis intervention if needed.
4. Maintain strict confidentiality in all relevant aspects of his/her clinical work and clinically related activities.

Education and Training

1. Responsible for development and implementation of the elder/adult dependent care education and training courses, including monthly lunchtime workshops and/or webinars, and Summer Series for Caregivers.
2. Develops and presents to the University community and Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, educational programs on various topics related to elder/adult dependent care, including psychological and emotional well-being, stress management, the workplace, relationships, family issues, housing, abuse issues, legal, financial, medical and insurance matters, enhancing communication, dementia, diseases and disabilities, end of life, resources, among others.
3. The Elder Care Counselor is available to educate Employee Assistance counselors and the Director, supervisors of the caregiving employee, intervention techniques, and appropriate use of program services.

Program Promotion

1. Collaborates with the Be Well At Work Program Manager, campus partners and the wider campus community to increase awareness of the Elder Care program and its services. This includes participation, as required, in campus wide programs such as new employee orientation, new faculty orientation, the Benefits Fair, Staff Appreciation Day, department fairs, and writing articles for campus affairs, communications, department newsletters, etc.
2. The Elder Care Counselor participates in campus committees, leadership activities, strategic planning, and collaborative relations with Campus partners. These include: Campus Memorial, CACWF, Retirement Center, School of Social Welfare.

Administrative Functions
1. Maintains client statistical information
2. Develops, updates, coordinates, and evaluates information and referral resources that support program services found on campus as well as in the community.
3. Participates in developing and implementing new program components and executes special projects as assigned

Required Qualifications

The Elder Care Counselor functions at the highest level of expertise with initiative and independence. The incumbent must use clinical, administrative, and organizational expertise and judgement in decision-making, requiring relevant knowledge and skills. Applies a variety of interventions on difficult cases and is an expert on adult /dependent care and work-related issues. All work must comply with professional, ethical, and legal regulations.
  • Maintains familiarity and ability to work with the diverse issues and needs of various multicultural, ethnic, socio-economic, educational, and age-specific populations within the University community.
  • Has knowledge of federal, state, and local laws and regulation regarding disability; workers' compensation; mental health; employee relations-labor relations; alcohol and drugs; Medicare/Medicaid; public housing; FMLA.
  • Demonstrates strong, clear communication skills in writing, in person and in presentation form.
  • Maintains a working knowledge of, and the ability to counsel and intervene in a broad range of clinical problems such as marital, family, interpersonal, parent-child, intrapsychic, behavioral, substance abuse, suicide-risk, depression.
  • Is an expert on elder/adult dependent care and work issues and keeps abreast of the latest developments and trends in elder/adult dependent care programs.
  • Has strong interviewing skills and interpersonal relations skills including the ability to establish rapport and on-going relationships with clients.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and skills in a range of counseling intervention techniques including individual, group, departments or units, systems and organizations.
  • Understands the social, emotional, behavioral and psychological implications of an employee's personal problems for themselves and their work environment.
  • Understands management and supervision theory and practice, including maintenance of performance standards.
  • Is skilled in conflict resolution, individual problem identification and resolutions methods and utilizes them.
  • Has advanced knowledge of normal and abnormal behavior and its manifestations in human beings.
  • Maintains strict confidentiality in all relevant aspects of his/her work and related program activities.
  • Functions independently.
  • Seeks consultation as professionally appropriate.
  • Able to consult with professional and nonprofessional colleagues.

Education/Training:
  • Master's or Doctorate degree in behavioral health field

Licenses or certifications required, if any:
  • Current California mental health license (LPCC, LP, LMFT, LCSW, LPC, etc.) in good standing

Salary & Benefits
