Department Summary:

The department has a mission to provide a high quality education to our diverse student population through excellence and innovation in teaching and research in order to serve the scientific and engineering needs of the state of Texas and the nation. This will be achieved by a balance of formal course work, practical laboratory training, and research projects that encompass both the basic science and the applied aspects of materials science and engineering. The department offers B.S., M.S. and Ph.D. in Materials Science and Engineering programs.

Position Summary:

We are looking to hire a Research Scientist for a DOD-funded project focusing on investigating the tribological properties of protective coatings with a focus on correlating their performance to the structure and chemistry of the sliding surfaces. The Scientist will be responsible for carrying research activities, high-level technical publications and proposal writing as well as presenting work progress to the program manager on a monthly basis, as well as presentation of original research at international/industrial conferences/meetings. The Scientist is expected to work closely with graduate and undergraduate students.

Minimum Qualifications:

The applicant should have background in materials science, surface science, mechanical engineering, chemistry, physics, or related field.

Preferred Qualifications:

Experience with the operation and maintenance of thin film deposition (PVD and CVD) and surface analytical tools (XPS, UPS, SEM, TEM, Raman, etc.) equipment is highly desirable.
