Job Description POSITION OBJECTIVE

We have Research Assistant 1 opportunities to advance new solutions in sickle cell anemia in-vitro diagnostics and blood cell biomechanics. This position will work under moderate supervision of the principle investigator to perform research work with human blood samples and paper based microfluidic electrophoresis.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Perform research work related to hemoglobin electrophoresis separation. Conduct hands-on experiment under biosafety level-2 laboratory environment including blood sample preparation, cell culture, DNA extraction, PCR, potentially immunoblot (not required) (60%). Maintain records of experiments. Collect data and assist data analysis using electronic database (Microsoft Office system) (20%)Assist other lab activities including developing improved techniques for biomechanics research platform. (20%)

NONESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS

    Perform other duties related to laboratory operations as assigned

CONTACTS

Department: Regular interaction with the principal investigator to oversee the efficient operation of the laboratory. Daily contact with postdoc research associate towards executing research projects.

University: Weekly contact with other departments and core facilities to use, exchange materials and information. Regular contact with CWRU facilities.

External: N/A

Students: Regular contact with students in the lab.

SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITY

No direct supervision of staff employees. Working with the principal investigator, will help train new staff and direct the work of students

QUALIFICATIONS

Experience: Bachelor's degree in biology/engineering-related major and 0 to 1 years of experience working in a biomedical research laboratory or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of biomedical research laboratory research experience.

REQUIRED SKILLS

    Hands on experience with human blood sample.
  1. Wet-lab experience.
  2. Able to follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of job.
  3. Proficient in Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  4. Ability to meet consistent attendance.
  5. Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors and customers face-to-face.
  6. Molecular biology experience (DNA extraction, PCR, Western Blotting) is preferred but not required
  7. Cell culture experience is preferred but not required

WORKING CONDITIONS

This position requires working in a biomedical research laboratory environment and working with frequent interactions with adjoining laboratories and vendors.
