Job Description Position Objective

Working under moderate supervision, the research assistant will assist in day-to-day experimentation in the Integrated Microbiome Core to support research studying in vitro and in vivo models of disease, and participate in pharmaceutical development and research. The research assistant will conduct testing of clinical specimens received by the core and ensure quality control and quality assurance responsibilities are met.

Essential Functions

    Perform DNA extraction on a variety of different specimens including clinical samples and pure isolates. (35%)Prepare clinical samples for micro/mycobiome studies. (20%)Order laboratory supplies. (10%)Perform a variety of other in molecular based assays, including quantitative qPCR. (10%)Analyze data and plan follow-up experiments accordingly. (10%)

NonEssential Functions

    Perform a variety of other in-vitro assays, including bacterial and fungal biofilm characterization. (5%)Maintain test equipment utilized in experiments. (5%)Perform other duties as assigned. (5%)


Department: Daily contact with supervisor to maintain workflow.

University: Occasional contact with other departments to exchange information.

External: Limited or no contact with vendors to exchange information.

Students: Contact with student employees to maintain workflow.

Supervisory Responsibility

No direct supervision of staff employees.


Education and Experience: Bachelor's degree and 0 to 1 years of related experience or Associate's degree in an approved biotechnology program and 0 to 2 years of experience.


    Has knowledge of commonly-used concepts, practices, and procedures within the medical mycology field. Relies on instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job. Ability to operate laboratory equipment. Strong organization skills; ability to multi-task, prioritize and meet deadlines. Must demonstrate attention to detail and accuracy, time management skills, and follow-through.Ability to work effectively independently and collaboratively within a team.Ability to work with sensitive information and maintain confidentiality. Effective problem-solving skills; must demonstrate sound judgment and good decision-making. Willingness and ability to rely on and follow instructions and pre-established guidelines to perform the functions of the job.Ability to meet consistent attendance.Ability to interact with colleagues, supervisors, and customers face to face.

Working Conditions

General laboratory environment. This position is expected to be conscientious of hazards, as the incumbent will be exposed to chemicals and clinical samples. Required personal protective equipment includes a laboratory coat, and gloves and protective eyewear as appropriate. Ergonomic concerns include regular and repetitive use of a keyboard and pipettes.
