Description:
  • A Postdoctoral research associate position in Environmental Chemistry is available in the Department of Physical & Environmental Sciences. This is a grant-funded position with 2 years of support and the potential for additional time contingent upon additional grant funding. This successful candidate will conduct research for a project recently funded by the Matagorda Bay Mitigation Trust (https://mbmtrust.com) to study the presence and interactions of mercury (Hg) and plastic debris in water, sediment and fisheries within the Lavaca/Matagorda and San Antonio Bay systems in coastal Texas.


Responsibilities:
  • Project management/coordination/development
  • Coordination and lead field research conducted in the Lavaca/Matagorda and San Antonio Bay systems under the guidance of Dr. Conkle.
  • Preparation, processing and analysis of samples collected
  • Data analysis, manuscript writing and publication of peer-reviewed research
  • Development of grant writing skills under the guidance of Dr. Conkle
  • Mentoring graduate and undergraduate students
  • Stakeholder engagement
  • Assisting with other microplastic and organic contaminant research within our lab
  • Perform other duties as assigned.


Qualifications:
  • Doctoral degree in Chemistry (Environmental or Analytical Focus), Ecotoxicology, Environmental Science, Ecology, Oceanography/Marine Science or related field by the position start date.
  • Experience planning and carrying out field work.
  • Research on contaminants in terrestrial and aquatic systems.
  • Knowledge of coastal and estuarine systems.
  • Contaminant analysis with analytical instrumentation.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • Research experience with plastic debris, microplastics or other similar materials.
  • Experience with the following analytical instrumentation:
    • FTIR w/ATR
    • FTIR microscopy w/ATR
    • GC-MS/MS
    • LC-MS
    • LC-Orbitrap fusion
  • Experience driving and trailering boats as well as pulling boats on a trailer.
  • Experience planning and carrying out field work in remote locations.
