Perform facilities engineering responsibilities involving the planning, design, construction, modification, operation, maintenance, and utilities. May serve as project leader in area of expertise for a major group of ongoing, technically complex projects with large budgets and requiring substantial coordination.


  • Monitor, report and respond to incidents that impact building infrastructure and associated systems for mission critical facilities. Systems include UPS', PDUs, rack PDUs, DC power distribution, HVAC, air handling units and building monitoring/control systems.
  • Develop, document, monitor, and analyze new and existing initiatives, such as site operating procedures
  • Prepare technical plans and reviews, for maintenance and construction activities.
  • Provide assessment, design, and technical recommendations; may include development and implementation.
  • Develop and define scopes of work and estimates.
  • Conduct risk assessments and develop contingency plans on less complex activities.
  • Plan, research, formulate, and prepare project analyses in area of expertise.
  • Prepare, review, and analyze projects' technical plans and specifications for sound design, conformance with design guidelines and other related criteria, and pertinent codes or standards.
  • Manage design activity or projects in area of expertise, and/or manage contractor activities.
  • Represent department on specific project teams and review committees.
  • Participate in department maintenance activities during normal business hours, after business hours, and weekends as needed.

Education and Experience

Bachelor's degree in relevant engineering discipline or other appropriate specialty, or combination of education/certification and work experience meeting the CA Engineer-in-Training requirements. At least five (5) years of directly related experience working in or in direct support of data center or mission critical facility environments. Experience managing complex projects.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

This position reports to the unit manager of the University IT (UIT), Technical Facilities Department. The candidate will be a member of a team, which is responsible for the planning, management, construction and maintenance of UIT computing facilities and associated infrastructure. This includes but is not limited to: Two large computing facilities (approximately 25K square feet), nine geographically distributed Electronic Communications Hubs (approximately 18K square feet).

This position is directly responsible for the operational maintenance and construction of the building infrastructure and associated systems that directly support the University's highly specialized and mission critical computing facilities. These systems include, but are not limited to UPS and DC power systems, power distribution systems, mechanical, plumbing, building security systems and other systems commonly found in a data center environment. This position shall coordinate and oversee maintenance and construction activities necessary to maintain and/or upgrade the building infrastructure systems to ensure maximum uptime for internal and external customer equipment that resides in these facilities.

This position shall coordinate and project manage work performed by vendors, contractors and University maintenance staff to ensure that work is clearly defined, method of procedure documents are developed and vetted with key stakeholders and that contractual and/or other obligations are met. This position will be required to develop and maintain accurate records that clearly identify system architecture, capacity levels, and maintenance and refresh cycle data. This position will be required to participate in decisions that could affect both short and long-range requirements concerning a project.

This position shall participate in and respond to academic and administrative projects, including providing estimates, design, budgeting, project management, and subsequent maintenance of systems in accordance with SLAs etc. Take responsibility for planning and foresight on how to best utilize all UIT facilities. This would include but is not limited to evaluating and recommending changes to how facilities are built and configured, working with clients and members of UIT on the strategic distribution of equipment and services, determining how facilities are used in support of disaster preparedness and recovery and insuring adequate capacities and redundancies are provided for the assigned facilities.

Candidates should be proficient with Microsoft Office suite; Word, Excel and Outlook. Familiar with Google GSuite applications (Docs, Sheets, etc), Adobe Acrobat, Visio or AutoCad. Candidate should have good understanding of Data Center Infrastructure Management (DCIM) systems with StruxureWare Data Center Operations and Data Center Expert, Panduit Synapsense systems, including building management systems for Tridium Niagara DDC or Emerson DeltaV platforms. Candidates should have knowledge of Lenel Onguard security access control, monitoring and reporting. Experience using ServiceNow application is desired to respond and manage client requests.

Certificates and Licenses
Must have and maintain a valid California Drivers License.
Data Center or Facility Management related certification desired

  • Frequently sitting, perform desk-based computer tasks, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 10 pounds.
  • Occasionally stand/walk, twist/bend/stoop/squat, grasp lightly/fine manipulation, use a telephone, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh up to 11-40 pounds.
  • Rarely kneel/crawl, climb (ladders, scaffolds, or other), reach/work above shoulders, grasp forcefully, writing by hand, sort/file paperwork or parts, lift/carry/push/pull objects that weigh >40 pounds.

  • Requires 24-hour response availability seven days per week for emergency situations.
  • Required to participate on the department's On-Call rotation schedule.
  • Requires work after business hours and weekend work on occasion for maintenance and/or project related activities.
  • Requires travel to multiple facilities as needed.
  • May be exposed to noise > 80dB TWA.
  • May work at heights 4 - 10 ft.
  • Normal working hours for this position is 9:00am to 6:00pm, Monday through Friday. Temporary working hours due to COVID-19 for this position are 7:00am to 4:00pm, Monday through Friday.
