MILLS EDUCATIONAL TALENT SEARCH SUMMER DISTANCE LEARNING PROGRAM 2020
Monday June 7, 2021 - Friday, July 2, 2021

Summary of Position:
Historical Overview

Mills College is home to the Mills Educational Talent Search Program (METS) and will serve approximately 60 students from Oakland, CA this summer. TRIO Programs are educational opportunity outreach programs designed to motivate and educationally support students from low-income and first-generation college going backgrounds.

The METS program provides academic, social/cultural awareness, college prep, career exploration, and financial literacy services to its participants. Our goal is to support students through high school graduation and help them gain access to a postsecondary education. The Summer Enrichment Program will provide online academic instruction in subjects: STEM, Life/Study Skills and College/Career/ Cultural Awareness.

Summer Enrichment Program Description
The METS Program offers a five-week distance learning program for students entering grades 6th through 12th. The METS summer enrichment 2021 program will be conducted remotely through an online distance learning experience. Staff orientation and training will take place before the program begins; training will take place June 1st - 3rd. This will include the student/parent orientation. Online instruction for the METS Summer Program is scheduled to begin Monday, June 7, 2021 and continue through Friday, July 2, 2021. The tentative daily instructional schedule is 10:00 am - 3:00 pm Monday -Thursday. Fridays will consist of interactive and team-building group activities.

Each member of instructional staff will be responsible for attending virtual weekly staff meetings, planning and conducting Friday online interactive activities over the four-week program, and attending the METS staff closing virtual session on Friday, July 2nd.

Mills College Educational Talent Search Program is currently seeking highly motivated, knowledgeable, creative, engaging, student focused, experienced educators to teach academic courses in STEM, Life/Study Skills and College/Career/Cultural Awareness. Courses will be taught to middle school students in 6th-8th grades and high school students in 9th-12th grades. The positions require someone who has passion, innovation, and knowledge to motivate and challenge students to generate skills necessary for college success. We seek instructors who can develop strong curriculum that addresses students' needs, interests, abilities, and curiosities in the subject. Online teaching experience is preferred.

Essential Job Functions:
  • Each instructor will develop a course proposal or set of lesson plans that state goals/objectives, student learning outcomes, methods needed to obtain goals/objectives/outcomes. At the conclusion of the session, the instructor will write a narrative evaluation on each student that outlines:
    • How student met goals/objectives/outcomes of class
    • Academic strengths and challenges throughout course
    • Character strengths and challenges throughout course
    • Other areas that need further development
    • Final grade for class

Additional Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develops and implements effective units, lessons and classroom activities
  • Organizes class systems/procedures and manages student behavior to ensure all students are fully engaged in learning; supports systems/procedures of classroom teachers
  • Design and implement a course syllabus that effectively outlines daily concepts covered, in-class & home assignments, quizzes, group work, projects, post assessment
  • Establish classroom management policies and procedures needed to maintain a productive classroom environment
  • Demonstrate knowledge of, and support, METS mission, vision, value statements, standards, policies and procedures, operating instructions, confidentiality standards, and the code of ethical behavior
  • Participate in METS weekly staff meetings
  • Plan and conduct weekly Friday virtual activities offered during the program
  • Attend virtual teacher orientation/planning sessions, program activities, & final teacher evaluation closing session
  • Perform other related duties as needed



Requirements:

Education and Experience
  • Minimum of a Bachelor's Degree. Preferred candidate holds Teaching Credential or working towards Teaching Credential
  • Minimum 2 years experience teaching in related subject
  • Minimum 2 years direct working relationship/or teaching low-income, first-generation college-bound students
  • Strong preference given to Oakland Unified School District teacher

Skills
  • Thorough knowledge of subject matter and skill acquisition in subject being taught
  • Knowledgeable of California Content standards for subject area (academic courses)
  • Knowledge of child/adolescent development and different learning styles
  • Skills and knowledge to effectively work with students with diverse academic, socioeconomic, cultural, linguistic and ethnic backgrounds
  • Ability to understand and enforce all METS Program policies



Additional Information:

Compensation: A stipend of up to $2,500.00 is awarded to the METS Program Summer Distance Learning Instructor for the 4-week program for each course taught.
