The Director of Student Leadership and Engagement is responsible for a broad oversight of the student activities, student organizations, leadership and mentoring programming, civic engagement, programs/activities, assessment and evaluation of all programs at the college. Supervises professional staff.
The Director of Student Leadership and Engagement serves in a leadership role within the Office of Student Services in setting college-wide priorities relating to leadership development, student organizations, civic engagement and programs/activities. This position serves as a key resource for professional staff across the college, for those who work with student leaders.
Lead, develop, motivate and manage a high performing team to meet strategic goals and business objectives while staying within budget. Identify opportunities for data collection (qualitative and quantitative) of student engagement, leadership and programming data from existing and proposed programs. This position works with the Office of Student Services staff as directed by the Vice President to support large-scale programs, including programs held annually such as orientations, commencements, convocations, etc.Special Assignments:
May be required to perform other duties as assigned. May be required to assist the agency or state government generally in the event of an emergency declaration by the Governor.KSA's/Required Qualifications:
Knowledge of Student Development Theory and/or practice.
Knowledge of student engagement research and/or practice.
Knowledge of strategic planning, assessment and evaluation processes and best practices.
Knowledge of student activities, leadership best practices and high impact practices.
Knowledge of diversity, equity and inclusion research and trends in higher education related to student engagement and leadership.
Demonstrated skills in presenting and facilitation.
Demonstrated skills in excellent written and verbal communication.
Demonstrated skills in problem solving, conflict resolution and consensus seeking.
Ability to lead and facilitate large and small group workshops, trainings, etc.
Ability to evaluate and synthesize complex ideas, concepts and processes.
Ability to be solution-oriented.
Master’s degree awarded by a regionally accredited institution. One to three years experience in a higher education setting.
Significant supervisory experience.
Significant experience providing excellent written and verbal communication.
Significant experience with administrative and logical support of a program or unit, working under pressure in a fast-paced environment, and managing multiple projects and tasks at the same time.
Must work evenings and weekends, and travel overnight and to different campuses of NOVA and VCCS colleges, as needed.Preferred Qualifications:
3-5 years of experience in higher education areas including: Student Life/Activities, Leadership Development, Residence Life, Career Services.
Experience with managing programs and/or projects.
Experience in a community college within a multi-campus system.Operation of a State Vehicle:
