As HR Consultant, you will work as part of a consultative HR team dedicated to providing strategic and operational support to our clients in the Temerty Faculty of Medicine and the Dalla Lana School of Public Health. Your established track record of building trusted partnerships and providing advice and guidance on staffing and organizational change will enable you to translate our clients’ needs into tactical plans and effective solutions. Drawing upon your comprehensive knowledge of applicable policies, collective agreements and employment laws, you will contribute on key matters relating to labour relations, employee relations, onboarding, organizational reviews, job evaluation and salary administration. Your ability to uphold a high standard of professionalism and confidentiality, and your willingness to support the advancement of faculty initiatives through targeted HR projects will make you an indispensable member of our team.

Your responsibilities will include:

  • Advising managers on a variety of human resources issues including job evaluation, recruitment, salary administration, performance management, and accommodation based on understanding of collective agreements and employment policies
  • Advising on the interpretation and application of collective agreements, employment policies and employment-related laws and jurisprudence
  • Providing advice and feedback to clients on the drafting of new and revised staff job descriptions and analyzing, evaluating and classifying positions
  • Providing independent advice and guidance on organizational change and restructuring
  • Coaching management on the appropriate approach to employee relations, discipline and dismissal situations
  • Mediating conflict situations between managers and non-unionized staff to resolve human resource issues
  • Investigating potential violations of the collective agreement, handling grievances and preparing managers for grievance hearings
  • Participating in special projects aimed at supporting and retaining staff

Essential Qualifications

  • University degree in a relevant field of study; completion of (or working towards) Certificate in Human Resource Management (CHRP), or an equivalent combination of education and experience
  • Minimum five years’ experience providing comprehensive, high quality, client-focused HR services, preferably in a unionized University or public sector environment
  • Comprehensive experience with job evaluation, compensation and recruitment practices
  • Experience with collective agreement and employment policy interpretation and application
  • Proven successful experience facilitating solutions in conflict situations and providing coaching support to managers
  • Experience conducting departmental staffing reviews, and implementing effective change based on innovative HR practices and principles
  • Comprehensive experience with job evaluation and compensation practices
  • Proven ability to work in a fast-paced high volume environment with strong multi-tasking and prioritizing abilities and attention to detail and accuracy
  • Strong commitment to and knowledge of issues of equity, diversity and inclusivity
  • Ability to deal with ambiguity and persevere in difficult and/or stressful situations
  • Superior oral and written communication skills
  • Strong active listening and interpersonal skills; professional demeanor with exceptional customer service orientation and ability to deal with sensitive issues with tract, diplomacy and compassion
  • Must be approachable and have demonstrated the ability to build effective working relationships in a manner that engenders support and cooperation
  • Ability to quickly grasp, interpret and apply collective agreement provisions and complex job evaluation requirements
  • Proven successful project management experience and analytical skills
  • Demonstrated creativity, flexibility, initiative and problem-solving skills
  • Ability to maintain strict standards of confidentiality
  • Proficiency with MS Office Suite, human resources information/management systems and applicant tracking systems
