Medicine by Design harnesses the exceptional expertise at the University of Toronto and its affiliated hospitals at the convergence of physical and life sciences, engineering, mathematics and medicine to undertake transformative research in regenerative medicine and cell therapy. Through strategic investments and partnerships, Medicine by Design is powering Toronto’s burgeoning biomedical ecosystem, strengthening Canada as a global centre for regenerative medicine and improving health outcomes.

Under general direction of the Director, Strategy & Translation, the Associate Director, Administration contributes to Medicine by Design’s overall vision, goals and mission by overseeing and executing all aspects of program operations, strategic communications, public relations, educational outreach, as well as full managerial authority of staff.

The incumbent ensures the smooth operations of the program, including management of staff, oversight of award programs and faculty search administration, financial and non-financial reporting and management of the financial administration for the unit including preparing financial plans and forecasting. In addition, the Associate Director collaborates on presentations to the Executive Committee and Executive Leadership Team, and liaises with University partners including the Research Services Office. The Associate Director develops and oversees the implementation of strategic communications and public relations; oversees educational outreach and international partnership programs activities to increase Medicine by Design’s profile and reputation.

The Associate Director, Administration will provide strategic guidance and support to complex, multi-faceted projects as they are under development, as well as identifying challenges that ongoing projects face and other barriers to success and developing solutions to those problems.


Bachelor’s degree in business administration, communications, public administration, public policy or acceptable equivalent combination of education and experience.


At least 6-7 years of relevant experience in project management and strategic communications role in a large research University or equivalent setting. Experience with management and supervision in a unionized environment preferred.


Superior written and verbal communication and interpersonal skills. Proven project management skills including the ability to set priorities, leverage limited resources, meet deadlines, liaise with multiple stakeholders, solve problems, resolve disputes and develop processes and policy for managing complex program operations. Strong organizational skills and ability to exercise initiative. Excellent computer skills, including Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook). Experience with web development software such as HTML, WordPress and Acrobat Professional an asset. Excellent research and speechwriting skills, with the ability to create and deliver content of a high quality across a range of topics, but particularly in the areas of stem cell research, regenerative medicine and commercialization, and in formats appropriate to a range of media.


Demonstrated abilities in developing networks of contacts and interests, particularly in the health and life sciences profession and community. High degree of collegiality, management experience and ability to work independently, as a team member and across divisions, institutions, etc. Proven ability to multi-task and source accurate information quickly. Require tact, discretion and ability to maintain confidentiality. Ability to exercise judgement and independent decision making. Ability to assimilate and interpret significant amounts of information. Ability to prioritize tasks and responsibilities. Demonstrated knowledge in print and new/emerging media including web-based marketing, content management solutions, and social networking tools. Familiarity with the university and research environment is essential.
