As a part of the country's oldest Catholic and Jesuit university, the Center for Social Justice (CSJ) animates the University's Jesuit values and mission through its work in research, teaching, and service. A component of the work includes keeping with Georgetown University's mission to educate people to be reflective lifelong learners and responsible and active participants in civic life and service to others and consistent with the university's Catholic and Jesuit identity and its institutional commitment to pursuing justice and the common good. The Center for Social Justice takes a curricular approach to the delivery of co-curricular programs and services. This approach is grounded in recognition of the CSJ team as social justice educators, an expressed and explicit commitment to racial justice and equity, and a continuous assessment of growth outcomes and operational effectiveness.

This position is an outgrowth of the CSJ's former position “Assistant Director, Student Leadership and Racial Justice Initiatives.” After the demonstrated impact and need for a full-time position responding to racial justice dialogues and the intersection of racial justice and community engagement, CSJ took the opportunity of a restructure to commit an entire position's portfolio to this work by a colleague at the Associate Director level. The Associate Director, Racial Justice Initiatives is responsible for coordinating CSJ-wide integration of racial justice programming - particularly dialogue - for students across CSJ programs and student organizations. A bridge-builder and advocate among individuals and campus units, this position works to connect faculty and staff colleagues, student-facing units, and student organizations to the University's missional initiative that uplifts racial justice. The Associate Director serves as a member of CSJ's Engaged Scholarship and Pedagogy team and contributes fully to the life, presence, and community of the Center for Social Justice.

Work Interactions

CSJ's Associate Director, Racial Justice Initiatives, works with students, faculty, staff, senior leadership, relevant Centers and Institutes and diverse DC-based and global partners. This position's supervisor and manager is CSJ's Director of Engaged Scholarship and Pedagogy Director. This position works with the entire Center for Social Justice professional team and wider Georgetown community, most notably units such as the Center for Multicultural Equity and Access and the Office of Student Equity and Inclusion in Student Affairs as well as the Center for New Designs in Learning and Scholarship (CNDLS) and Racial Justice Institute. This position supervises one Justice Graduate Intern (Master's level student) and a team of undergraduate Federal Work Study students.


  • Master's degree very highly preferred. 2-4 years of experience could be exchanged for advanced degree.
  • 5-7 years of professional experience
  • Higher education experience around social justice, racial justice, community engagement, and/or equity working with diverse constituents
  • Capacity to offer respectful, and deliberate representation of a faith-based University to non-University individuals and partners
  • Demonstrated commitment to diversity, inclusion, and justice work in career to date and plans to stay current in these commitments
  • Superb group facilitation skills
  • Strong written and oral communication skills and group facilitation skills
  • Clear demonstration of applying an equity lens to day-to-day work and modeling for others how to do so
  • Understand the history of racism and the impacts of institutional and structural racism

Preferred Qualifications
  • Previous experience with or knowledge of Jesuit higher education
  • Previous experience with or knowledge of Washington, DC, particularly the context of racial in/justice
