The Director of Finance and Administration (DFA1) position serves as the strategic business leader for the Department of Molecular and Cellular Physiology in the School of Medicine, reporting to the Chair of MCP with a secondary reporting relationship to the Senior Associate Dean for Finance & Administration. The successful candidate will partner with the department chair, as well as department faculty, to administer key operational areas, while also setting strategic priorities for goals and initiatives of the department.

For the Department of Molecular & Cellular Physiology, the DFA provides leadership and direction for all financial and administrative functions including: budgeting and financial management totaling over $26M, strategic planning, human resources, grant and contract administration, academic affairs, facilities/space, compliance, and safety. The DFA manages department operations, establishes the administration's organizational structure and environment and has oversight for administrative policies and procedures in the department.

Lead the finance and administration operations for the Department of Molecular & Cellular Physiology. Manage staff to achieve the School of Medicine clinical, research and teaching missions, goals and objectives. Ensure compliance in all areas. The duties of this position are typically split between 70% operational and 30% strategic.


  • Establish business and administrative mission and goals. Partner with faculty leadership on departmental affairs and advocate the unit's needs and goals to internal and external parties. Evaluate business processes and operational and/or financial effectiveness. Develop business plans.
  • Analyze department or program needs and make recommendations to senior leaders for changes in staffing, facilities, health and safety compliance, finance, technology and/or administrative functions. Work with the Chair and /or Dean's Office regarding resources to support faculty activities and interests.
  • Responsible for overall fiscal wellness and financial operations. Develop and monitor consolidated budget and analyze research funding; implement financial growth and sustainability strategies. Recommend and develop strategies for general cost containment, strategic investments, and growth management. Provide reliable quarterly financial updates and forecasts to individual department faculty and the chair with regard to grant and contract accounts.
  • Manage staff in the day-to-day operations. Responsible for hiring and retaining staff, career coaching, ensuring required training is completed, personal development of direct reports and accountable for the performance of employees. Ensure work completion within schedule and constraints. Responsible for workforce planning and administration of staff for faculty and programs. Encourage a culture of continuous improvement and accountability.
  • Responsible for ensuring a diverse and inclusive environment for staff, faculty, and trainees who represent diversity in race, ethnicity, gender identification, disability and abilities, sexual preference, and perspectives.
  • Will independently and in collaboration with the human resources manager, guide faculty supervisors in the interpretation and implementation of human resources policies, procedures and programs.
  • Oversee management of all student, postdoctoral fellow and graduate program administration.
  • Interpret, implement and ensure compliance with academic and administrative policies and procedures within the unit.
  • Collaborate with the DFA’s of other Basic Science departments. Manage the Faculty Affairs unit of the Basic Science Consortium.

Preferred Skills:

  • Master’s degree (BA, Health Care Administration, Public health or related field)
  • Grant Management Experience

Required Education & Experience:
Bachelor’s degree or combination of education and relevant experience. Three years of progressively responsible managerial experience, including financial and budget preparation and two years of supervisory experience.

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities:

  • Demonstrated supervisory skills including conflict resolution.
  • Demonstrated experience implementing financial funding concepts and regulatory agency policies and guidelines.
  • Working knowledge of grants and contract administration.
  • Strong knowledge of industry standards and/or regulatory requirements.
  • Demonstrated ability to identify and analyze all pertinent information/data to make and communicate decisions to meet the unit's current and future financial, research, academic and administrative needs.
  • Strong negotiation and effective interpersonal skills.
  • Ability to establish a culture of integrity within their unit and with those external to the unit.
  • Demonstrate to others that he/she is direct, truthful and credible.
  • Demonstrated skills as a receptive listener, influential and persuasive and seeks to understand the differing sides of each situation.
