Job Purpose

The Fitness and Wellness Assistant General Manager plays a leading role in managing Stanford Redwood City (SRWC) Recreation and Wellness Center’s execution of all fitness and wellness programs. The position creates a sense of belonging through community engagement in the fitness and wellness programs. Supervising over fifteen contingent staff, the position works as part of a highly functioning team to develop an overall program strategy that aligns with the goals of the SRWC campus and the Recreation and Wellness department.

CORE DUTIES

Staff Management (40%)

  • Responsible for the daily management of staff, including the recruitment, hiring, scheduling, motivation and retention of fitness associates, instructors, and trainers.
  • Provide leadership and education to the fitness associates, personal training, and group exercise staff.
  • Plan, organize and facilitate training, work assignments, evaluations, and if needed, disciplinary action for personnel.
  • Ensure employee procedure handbook is available and up to date for fitness staff.
  • Cultivate personnel as well as organize educational and professional development.
  • Provide ongoing performance feedback.
  • Promote customer encounters that are courteous, respectful and efficient.

Administrative Responsibilities (30%)

  • Regularly collect and analyze data, create reports, review and explain trends; formulate and evaluate alternative solutions and/or recommendations to achieve the goals of the program.
  • Communicate with the appropriate staff to ensure all program information for the various fitness and recreation programs are input into the registration software.
  • Contribute to the budget planning process, track annual budget and modify as necessary, monitor and approve expenses.
  • Collect satisfaction surveys and customer response forms; create reports and recommend solutions.
  • Process refund requests for customers, as needed. (in person/financials bigger picture)
  • Manage necessary financial processes for fitness and wellness programs and customers.
  • Review, evaluate, and recommend changes to the policies and procedures relating to the operations of personal training, with constant regard to the department's strategic plan.
  • Ensure prompt and effective verbal and written communication is provided.

Program Management (30%)

  • Develop and execute a tactical plan to meet the fitness and wellness program objectives.
  • Manage established customer service standards of the fitness and wellness programs as established by SRWC.
  • Assist individuals in the community with setting and achieving fitness and wellness goals.
  • Assist in formulating and delivering innovative methods of recruiting, retaining and serving members of the campus community.
  • Strategize and request marketing material as needed for fitness and wellness programs.
  • Engage in and manage risk management responsibilities in fitness and wellness areas.
  • Work with operations partners to maintain clean, safe, fun, innovative and inviting personal training facilities and equipment.
  • Plan and implement community events for the fitness and wellness area.
  • Develops and maintains positive working relationships with University and/ or community representatives, vendors and other regular contacts to meet the objectives of the fitness program.
  • Serves on Recreation and Wellness, DAPER, and campus committees as directed.

Education and Experience

  • Bachelor’s Degree and three years of relevant experience or combination of education and relevant experience.

  • Ability to be resourceful and creative in problem solving while not sacrificing quality or safety of environment.
  • Ability to coordinate daily activities including work scheduling, quality assurance, monitoring of activities, and supervision of personnel.
  • Knowledge of current risk management practices in recreational facilities and student management strategies.
  • Demonstrated ability to provide a high standard of customer service.
  • Experience with MS Office products and database applications.
  • Ability to exert physical effort, including the ability to lift a >50lbs., bending, squatting, reaching, or being on feet for long periods of time. Constantly perform desk-based computer tasks. Frequently stand/walk, sit, grasp lightly/fine manipulation. Occasionally use a telephone.
  • Ability to work occasional extended hours, evenings and weekends as needed.

Preferred Qualifications

  • Master’s degree in exercise-related field.
  • Nationally recognized personal training certification or group fitness certification.
  • Experience in fitness programming, health promotion, and/or wellness coaching.
  • Current American Red Cross CPR, AED and First Aid certification, or ability to obtain by start date.
