This position reports to the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management.
Primary Functions and Responsibilities:
The Director of Financial Aid is responsible for planning and leading a critical student service unit and overseeing/managing the daily operations of a fast-paced, customer service oriented team. This individual will provide the vision and leadership to inspire, motivate, coach, and mentor professional and support staff to reach enrollment goals, while continually monitoring and evaluating the effectiveness of financial aid policies, practices, and procedures.
The Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships is a divisional manager and supervises financial aid personnel with a strong commitment to client service and a collaborative approach to problem solving. Supervisory responsibilities include but are not limited to; oversight of employee selection, training, daily work performance, performance evaluation, and counseling when necessary.
This position is responsible for all aspects of processing undergraduate and graduate aid, awarding a variety of scholarships and veteran benefits. The Director of Financial Aid and Scholarships coordinates services between campus units and oversees the awarding of more than $64 million of financial aid funds.
The successful candidate will provide leadership for fund management, NCAA Division II athletic compliance, strategic policy analysis/planning, scholarship administration, and the processing operation. The Director serves as the new GI Bill leader to ensure compliance with oversight of qualified veterans, coordinating with the division of Academic Affairs to identify academic advisors who work with veterans to establish a plan of study specific to a degree completion. The director shares accountability for recruitment and retention in administration of federal, state, institutional and scholarship funds.
The director works closely with the Associate Vice Chancellor for Enrollment Management in terms of budgets, strategies for delivery of student aid, and the analysis and implementation of appropriate financial aid models to support university recruitment and retention goals.
The director develops policies and procedures in accordance with federal and state regulations, and university guidelines related to a variety of scholarships, assures data integrity, manages the departmental budget, and disseminates data for federal, state and institutional reports.
The director will work closely with both Advancement and the Controller’s Office to report scholarship endowment utilization, seek collegiate and departmental nominees based on appropriate scholarship criteria, and distribute privately funded scholarship awards. Other duties as assigned.
· Earned Master’s Degree from an accredited university in a related area
· Minimum of seven years of progressively responsible experience in a university Financial Aid office
· Experience with staff motivation, supervision, training and employee relations
· Excellent interpersonal communication (written, oral and verbal), and organizational skills, as well as an ability to work with a diverse, multicultural student population and workforce
· Experience in new technological systems implementation to work more efficiently
· Leadership experience and skills in establishing partnerships within and between complex organizations
· Ability to conceptualize organizational goals that reflect the mission of the University of North Carolina at Pembroke in support of recruitment, retention and graduation rate increases
· Demonstrated skill in long-range planning, impact and risk assessment, and working effectively through others
· Experience in goal identification, policy formulation, implementing regulations.
