Job Description
The Promise Heights PromiseCorps initiative will onboard 15 PromiseCorps members at five public school sites (PK-12) for the 2021-2022 school year. PromiseCorps members (AmeriCorps) complete a year of service at a public school by expanding the capacity of schools to support students and families. They work with Community School Directors (licensed social workers) and public school staff to conduct individual student assessments for those identified as at risk to be chronically absent, create attendance plans for students, and facilitate appropriate referrals. PromiseCorps members also plan and manage school-wide events intended to create a culture of consistent school attendance. The Promise Neighborhood program is a U.S. Department of Education initiative focused on breaking the cycle of inter-generational poverty by significantly improving the educational and developmental outcomes and overall life prospects of children and youth in our most distressed communities. The core idea behind the initiative is to provide both effective schools and strong systems of support to children, youth and their families in poverty and thus meeting their health, social services, and educational needs. The University of Maryland School of Social Work is the lead agency for the Promise Heights Promise Neighborhood in the Upton/Druid Heights neighborhood in West Baltimore. Promise Heights is charged with working with community-based organizations, schools, faith-based institutions, and others to build a pipeline of wraparound services to ensure pathways out of poverty for youth and their families. Functions: 
  • Develop an individual attendance plan for each student on caseload to support student achievement, which will be updated every 30 days to ensure that students’ needs are being met.
  • Provide case management supports by linking students and families to interventions and partner programs and providing appropriate follow-up on referrals. Document all referrals in ProMIS as necessary and appropriate.
  • Monitor student performance in programs and services through daily documentation of interactions with students and families.
  • Help families to support student success by fostering a home environment that encourages student achievement through team home visits.
  • Maintain and update all contacts, referrals, case management notes, and outcomes.

Education:  Bachelor’s Degree is strongly preferred. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
  • Ability to learn and grow through a professional development plan process and succeed within a results-oriented culture.
  • A devotion and ability to build close relationships with scholars and their families, and to motivate them through positive interviewing, feedback, and reinforcement.
  • Experience and proficiency with technology.
  • Knowledge of or willingness to learn about the cultural and internal barriers which may exist for low-income families to raising college-ready children.
  • Strong commitment to belief and expectation that children growing up in West Baltimore can succeed academically.
  • A passion for addressing issues of poverty, equity, and access.
  • Highly motivated and innovative.
Program Start/End Date:August 16, 2021 to July 31, 2022 Hours: Full-Time, M-F Program Benefits: Living Allowance ($20,000), Education Award ($6,345), Training, Health Coverage (if needed), Child Care Subsidy (if needed), and Application Fee waived for University of Maryland School of Social Work (for interested applicants). Terms:Applicants are permitted to be enrolled in higher education institution and attend classes during off hours.
