Beirne B. Carter Immunology Center at the University of Virginia seeks a Laboratory Specialist or Intermediate in the laboratory of Dr. Sarah Ewald. The major duties of this position will be divided into approximately 30% lab administration and 70% research. Prior experience in Cell Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry or a related field is required. The individual will be a team player with excellent organizational and analytical skills. The qualified applicant should be excited to support our team’s commitment diversity within the lab and our broader research community.

Specific administrative duties will include ordering, equipment management, maintenance of an animal colony (with the lab’s animal facilities users) and oversight of undergraduate students.

Research will involve participating in collaborative experiments using a novel microscopy-based proteomics technique developed in the Ewald Lab called automated Spatially Targeted Optical Micro Proteomics (autoSTOMP). This project is supported by an NIGMS R35 and NIAID R21 grant. This will include tissue culture techniques, microscopy and analysis of proteomics data sets in collaboration with graduate students and post docs. Previous experience in cell culture, confocal two-photon microscopy techniques or protein biology would be ideal, however, instruction will be provided. The individual should be self-motivated, collaborative, with developed communication skills.

This is a restricted position; continuation is dependent on funding and satisfactory performance.

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS:

Laboratory Specialist:

Education: Bachelor's degree in related science.

Experience: 3 years of experience in Cell Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry or a related field. 6 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.

Laboratory Specialist Intermediate:

Education: Bachelor's degree in related science.

Experience: 6 years of experience in a lab technician role in Cell Biology, Immunology, Biochemistry or a related field. Master's degree may substitute for required experience. 9 years of experience accepted in lieu of degree.
