Position Description:

The University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill (UNC-CH) produced its first Greenhouse Gas Inventory in 2007 and a Climate Action Plan in 2009. The Greenhouse Gas Specialist maintains the viability and monitors the progress of the Climate Action Plan. Additionally, the Greenhouse Gas Specialists provides modeling and analytical support related to other sustainability targets like water and waste.

The principal functions of the Greenhouse Gas Specialist are:
• Collect, analyze, and track emissions and other sustainability data from across the UNC-CH campus.
• Report on UNC-CH’s annual greenhouse gas emissions and other sustainability indicators.
• Maintain the inventory of UNC-CH’s greenhouse gas emissions and other sustainability data.
• Provide data updates for the Sustainable Carolina website and provide status reports on progress.
• Develop relevant key performance indicators to assess UNC-CH’s progress toward its sustainability goals and report results through presentations, publications, web-sites, and events.

Perform various energy and other sustainability data analysis and modeling relevant to sustainability and operations.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements:

Four year degree with a preference for a related major in a physical science, biological science, environmental science/engineering, occupational safety, industrial technology or closely related science; or an equivalent combination of training and experience. Some positions may require specific certifications or licenses. Specific jobs will require additional minimum training and/or licensing upon selection.

Essential Skills, Knowledge and Abilities:

Fundamental understanding of greenhouse gas emissions, climate change, and the energy using activities that contribute to greenhouse gas emissions. Ability to develop and communicate the business case and budgets for cost-effective policies and actions.

Preferred Qualifications:

The ideal candidate for this position will have a Bachelor of Science degree in physics, engineering, environmental science, economics or other related degree, advanced skills in data management and analysis, and project management experience. GHG Specialist must have excellent oral and written communication skills, the ability to manage a Climate Action Plan that has a large, diverse group of stakeholders, and the ability to convey complex data in user friendly formats. Previous experience with calculating and reporting greenhouse gas inventories is preferred.
