Work Schedule:

Work during the UNC Visitors Center’s hours of operation, Monday – Friday, 9 a.m. – 5 p.m. Doors will be open to the public on a reduced schedule of 10 a.m. – 2 p.m.

Ability to work at least six hours a week, with at least a three-hour uninterrupted time span.

The position is for summer 2021, May – August.

Note: The UNC Visitors Center, like all University facilities, has modified its operations because of the COVID-19 pandemic. The center is operating with reduced capacity to allow for physical distancing and with reduced hours. All staff, student interns and guests must adhere to the COVID-19 Community Standards. In-person tours are suspended, though student interns will participate in the Sense of Place Zoom tour.

Attend all-team meetings, typically held once a month.

Adherence to Visitors Center dress code, including wearing official UNC Visitors Center apparel.

Description of Work:

There’s no place on earth quite like Carolina. The UNC Visitors Center connects visitors with the University and tailors each visit to the interests of our guests. As Carolina’s front door, the UNC Visitors Center is the gateway to discovering the many stories and hallmarks of our extraordinary university. Along with introducing guests to the innovation, impact and accessibility that define Carolina’s identity today, our goal is to ensure that each visitor takes with them a true sense of what our treasured university is all about. The Visitors Center’s new home on Franklin Street brings many opportunities to interact with guests in exciting ways, including interactive technology and touch-screen monitors.

The UNC Visitors Center staff ensures guest satisfaction by providing exceptional customer service. The tour guide and communication specialist intern is responsible for conducting daily campus tours (virtual tours now and in-person when safe to do so) and providing visitors with up-to-date information, directions, referrals and history. UNC Visitors Center staff must be creative, enthusiastic and ready to welcome, assist and tour guests. Staff should possess a desire to develop their interpersonal skills and to learn how to think on their feet. As representatives of the Visitors Center and the University, staff will also receive official UNC Visitors Center polos to wear during each shift. Most importantly, they must be excited to share with visitors all that makes Carolina special.

This position offers students the opportunity to practice and improve their communication and public speaking skills. A strong knowledge of Chapel Hill and campus history is essential to this position, as is a masterful utilization of resources and problem-solving skills. All students will receive in-depth training for tour certification.

Responsibilities:
Facilitate the Visitors Center’s daily operations through promptly greeting, orienting, guiding and meeting any visitor needs.

Lead one-hour guided walking campus tours when in-person tours resume.

Conduct and/or assist with Zoom campus tour as needed.

Assist in the daily operations and physical appearance of the Visitors Center through administrative work and maintaining storage and area cleanliness.

Initiate, design and research new projects for the Visitors Center as needed.

Abide by and adhere to all applicable Visitors Center policies and procedures.

Additional duties and responsibilities as required or assigned.

Education and Experience:

Current UNC students only.

Excellent customer service skills

Well-spoken and effective communicator

Ability to multi-task and independently problem-solve

Adaptability to changing conditions (remote work) and hours.

Self-motivated individual who takes initiative

Collaborate, positive and dynamic

Passionate about Carolina and Chapel Hill

Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
