Accountabilities:A Carpenter is responsible for trouble shooting, making repairs, installing, and maintaining a variety of carpentry related items on campus. Experience in multiple aspects of carpentry-type labor and the safety and building codes associated with these tasks is critical.
Responsibilities include conducting layouts for assigned jobs, reading and interpreting specifications from blueprints or schematics, applying relevant building codes, preparing material estimates and orders, and translating prints into finished products; hanging sheet rock, making plaster, trim work and cabinetry/furniture, window, and flooring repairs; inspecting roofing system and making repairs; performing associated preparation work (i.e. form and frame work, trim setting, erect scaffolding.); working closely with campus customers to understand their needs; coordinating,scheduling work and closing out jobs; overseeing outside contractors to ensure Colgate standards are met. Must be able to work independently, as well as the ability to work with other people and coordinate with other trade shops. Ability to use computers for email, work order entries, material procurement, estimating, and other shop related activity.
Professional Experience/ Qualifications:A minimum of a High school degree/GED, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable skills are attained.
At least one of the following is required:
Certification from an accredited carpentry apprentice program.
Graduation from certified trade school, and 1 year of field experience.
Proof of 4 consecutive years as a journeyperson in the field.
Must be able to work independently, as well as part of a team and coordinate with other trade shops.
Must have good computer skills including Microsoft Word, and the ability to use computer programs to complete work order entries, material procurement, estimating, and other shop related activity.
Must be capable of working cooperatively with a diverse group of faculty, staff and students on a daily basis.
Requires the ability to communicate effectively with a diverse range of constituents.
Education:A minimum of a High school degree/GED, or a combination of education and experience from which comparable skills are attained.
Physical Requirements:Ability to work in a variety of environmental conditions as needed. Exposure to heights, high speed power tools, and outdoor work. Must be able to lift a minimum of 50 pounds.
Will be required to wear a NIOSH (National Institute of Occupational Health & Safety) approved respirator and personal protective equipment.
Responsible for following all procedures to conduct work activities in a safe manner including but not limited to wearing PPE required for specific duties and safe handling of chemicals as outlined by University policies and/or the supervisor. Responsible for immediately reporting any unsafe conditions to the supervisor and/or Environmental Health and Safety.
Other Information:A current valid driver’s license, in accordance with the University’s Driver Safety and Motor Vehicle Use Policy is required.
